A Little Bit about Bagnell

 do  Our goal: to develop not only young adults who can read, but also young adults who do read: life-long, active, critical readers.   Literacy Learning 7 General Overview of the Newtown Middle School Reading Program

Components of the Program  Texts  Word Study  Study Skills  Self-Selection Novels  Writer’s Notebook  All classes involve the use of a variety of reading materials and activities to meet our goal.

Texts  Glencoe Literature: The Reader’s Choice (McGraw-Hill, 2002)  Prentice Hall Literature: Common Core Edition (Pearson, 2012)  These anthologies contains a wide variety of texts: high- quality literature in various genres as well as engaging informational materials. Through which both comprehension and study strategies can be developed

Study Skills Teacher-selected and teacher-generated materials will be used for the instruction of study skills such as : *Time Management *Organization *SQ3R *Learning Modalities *Note Taking *Memory Techniques *Test Taking Word Study Council Rock Word Study Program consists of: *“Unforgivables” *High frequency words *High frequency words *Syllabication Rules *Prefixes *Suffixes *Suffixes *Root words *Root words

Self-Selection of Novels  Self-selection of novels will be done through Reading Workshop. In addition to conferencing with the teacher during Reading Workshop, students will be responsible for completing journal entries during Reading Workshop and for completing one book review during each marking period.

Homework  Students will receive homework several times a week  Homework is an important part of each student’s final grade  Homework is expected to be turned in on the date that it is due  No credit will be given for those assignments that turned in late

Grading  Students are graded on a point system  Each assignment carries a different point value  Students are encouraged to keep track of their own grade  Utilize the HAC  Interim Reports- October 3rd

Absences and Make- Up Work  Students are responsible for making up all work they miss  Students must schedule make-up tests  “We Missed You” Binder  R/A Period- Each day from 8:15-8:45  Clinic-Thursdays 3:00-3:45 (Make-up tests, extra help or supervised homework time)  Our class website Our class website Our class website
