CTE AND ROP IN A LINKED LEARNING APPROACH Brian Willemse, Health Academy Coordinator

OUTLINE OF THE PRESENTATION Introduce Indian Springs High School Health Academy CTE/ROP within a Linked Learning Pathway…you are not alone! CTE and the college bound…a scheduling dilemma!!! AP/Honors and CTE/ROP Explain role of CTE and ROP in the pathway –piece of the WBL puzzle

BURNING QUESTIONS What questions are in your head right now and what you want to learn about? Poll Everywhere

ISHS HEALTH ACADEMY Launched August 2013 Partnership with Loma Linda University Health Focused on Health Careers Students earn real certifications in high school within ROP settings or via other means

ISHS HEALTH ACADEMY Currently 300 students Projected to grow to 500 Offer variety of certifications/WBL experience Patient Care Biotechnology Public Health

WHAT IS A CAREER PATHWAY? A career pathway is a sequence of courses embedded with work based learning opportunities that prepare students for both college and career upon completion of high school The focus is on providing students with real world experiences to help them become equipped for jobs in the 21 st century.

CTE/ROP WITHIN A LINKED LEARNING PATHWAY CTE cannot be a stand alone course anymore!!! It must be integrated into a full program of study for the the students. But HOW????

OVERLAPPING CORE WITH CTE/ROP Advisory Board – a pathway advisory board, not a single course Meets quarterly One meeting dedicated to course approval Common prep period with CTE/ROP and core teachers Weekly meetings Incorporation of CTE in pathway projects Horizontal articulation

CTE AND ROP WITHIN THE MASTER SCHEDULE

REALITY The University of California requires 15 a-g courses for admission BUT….A report was released to show that the average number of a-g courses to gain access to the UC campuses for fall 2013 was 26 Quick Math…. 7 Periods x 4 years = 28 courses – 2 courses for PE….. = 26 AND….What about other electives (AVID, band, etc)

Plan A-College and Career

Plan B-University

CTE AND ROP – A PIECE OF THE PUZZLE CTE and ROP courses are an integral part of the Linked Learning pathway, but they can only be a piece of the puzzle that is work based learning

WORK BASED LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES AT ISHS Patient Care: Certified Nurses Assistant – CTE/ROP Emergency First Responder - ROP/CTE Medical Assistant (coming soon) – CTE/ROP Biotechnology: Biotechnology 1 – a-g elective Biotechnology 2 (coming ) – In process Public Health: CPR Instructor – NOT in master schedule Other: Shadowing Mobile Health Clinic Trips – LLU My Campus etc.

POINTS FOR CONSIDERATION FOR NON-CTE WBL EXPERIENCES You MUST know legal requirements and bring in legal experts Affiliation agreements MUST be made with downtown Building a relationship with businesses is key “One bad apple” Start small

CURRICULUM DEVELOPMENT Part of our progress has come from getting courses a-g approved Ideally these are connected to industry level certifications Things to consider Who is qualified to teach the course(s)? Is there an existing course that can be folded into the pathway (e.g. ROP)? Who can help you in writing these course (SPOILER ALERT: there is!)? Are these courses written already, such that they can simply be adopted?

THANK YOU!
