What is Biology 1.1

I. What is Biology??? A. Biology- The study of living things

So What Constitutes a LIVING thing? Living Things Scavenger Hunt 1. Go outside, but stay within a 2 block radius of the school. 2. Find 2 living things and 2 non- living things. 3. Respect other peoples’ property and be careful on the streets! 4. Be back in 5 minutes!

II. Living Things A. Organism- Any living thing. 1. Organisms vary in size but all have the same 5 traits: 1. They are organized by cells 2. They reproduce 3. They use energy 4. They grow & develop 5. They adjust/adapt

II. Living Things 5. They adjust/adapt to the environment a. Stimulus- b. Response-

How did your living things compare? How about your non-living things? Tell your neighbor any mistakes you made and what you know now!

II. Living Things B. Maintain HomeoSTAsis- The internal conditions STAY the same 1. Temperature, water balance, etc 2. Life is driven by homeostasis C. Needs 1. A place to live 2. Raw materials a) Water, food (minerals and nutrients)

How does science solve problems? Does a Banana Sink or Float? Make sure you follow the instructions closely!

III. The Scientific Method A. Scientific Method- An organized procedure for collecting data and solving problems Use the next slide to see if you can identify which steps you used in the banana activity (write on the back of your banana data sheet)

III. The Scientific Method B. The ONLY Steps of the Scientific Method??? 1. State the Question 2. Gather Information 3. Form a Hypothesis 4. Perform an Experiment 5. Analyze Data (Q & Q) 6. Draw Conclusions 7. Repeat or Revise Hypothesis

III. The Scientific Method C. Independent Variable- The part of the experiment that you are CHANGING or TESTING. 1. You should only test 1 variable at a time!

III. The Scientific Method D. Dependent Variable- The effect of the change (independent variable) 2. What you MEASURE 2. Ex: Watering the plant with coffee (independent) caused the plant to die (dependent)

III. The Scientific Method E. Control- The part of the experiment that your COMPARE the variable to. F. Constants- Factors that remain fixed (don’t change) during the experiment Which part of the banana activity was the control? Independent variable? Dependent variable?

III. The Scientific Method F. Theory- An explanation based on MANY observations and experiments. 1. Supported by a lot of data 2. We’re PRETTY SURE it’s true! G. Law- Statement about how things in nature seem to work ALL THE TIME. 1. We KNOW it’s true!

IV. Recap ► What is Biology? ► Which part of the experiment does not change? ► What are the general steps of the scientific method? ► What does it take for a hypothesis to become a theory? ► What is homeostasis?
