National Engineers’ Week Future City Competition SOUTH FLORIDA REGIONAL

FC by-the-numbers 20 Schools have registered (~300 students) – (20 schools MUST be required for Region’s winner to go to National competition in Washington) 5 schools have mentors (15 more are still needed) Local competition costs $12,000, all funded by engineering organizations and volunteers Nationally 1,350 +/- schools participate, representing over 40,000 + students FC is the BEST predictor of future engineers from among several K-12 competitions

Project Plan (NEW) This is a PROJECT MANAGEMENT tool (see pg. 25) (use forms beginning on page 34)  Start it EARLY, set your GOALS, plan ahead  Update it as you go, validate or modify as needed  Project Plan has 4 parts: 1.DEFINE: Set goals of targets and achievements 2.PLAN: Create a Schedule, assign players 3.DO: Conduct check sessions, asses progress 4.REVIEW: Reflect on achievements  10 points

SimCity Design  SimCity 4 or SimCity 4 Deluxe ™ PC (Windows), you get download code when you register (see pg. 27)  2 Additional downloads available from National  Work is off-line, uploaded when submitted  Tutorial on National’s website under “Resources”  See Page 43 for progress steps(2,500, 5,000…  Decision Criteria that students are to select  Maximum of 28 slides  SAVE-SAVE-SAVE S A V E !!!!!!!  54 points

7. City Design Submittal  Cheat codes (e.g. “Sandbox”) & other Shortcuts will lead to Deductions of your design.  Select City Name [place on the slides]  On-line submittal  +Florida Rules: Mail, FedEx, or hand deliver;  Keep separate copy on CD or jump drive for yourself, [NO SUBMITTALS ACCEPTED]

City Description  Pages Essay requirements (1,500 words)  “Waste Not, Want Not”: Design an innovative citywide Solid Waste Management System …  Go to webinar-recording-slides  Suggest field trip & Interviews  Consider effectiveness, efficiency, reliability, sustainability; practical applications, collecting, sorting, managing, processing, storing, transporting, reclaiming…discuss!!!  Employ innovations, create the new FUTURE NEW

9. Essay Submittal  Bibliography must be included, in MLA format  Include a Cover Page with School Name  Use same City Name for the entire competition  Use graphics and illustrations, colors  UPLOAD ON-LINE TO FC WEBSITE  Submit by 3PM Jan. 8 along w/ Project Plan  to  60 points

Model Construction Plan ahead, sketch, select scale, compare sizes Solid base of wood…always test for bending Consult the engineer… Look for scrap materials, or purchase new Best to use recycled materials, such as: Old toys; Model cars, trains, airplanes, boats Clean kitchen utensils Clean and empty food containers (cans, etc) Holiday decorations Mirrors (careful) for water effect Keep close tab of expenses, file report, $100 max

AWARDS First, Second and Third Place + Florida Rules: – Tie Breaker to be decided by Regional Director – Weight & size limitations on model are enforced. – Schools with more than one COMPETITIVE team, may have up to 3 submittals of Virtual City, BUT only one team will be allowed to compete at the Region and advance to the Regional Finals TIE BREAKER NOTE THIS
