The Eukaryotes 12c: Algae
Note: this is just a few of the algal groups
Chlorophyta = green algae Chlamydomonas spp. Chlamydomonas nivalis (6.6) “snow algae”
Marine green algae Ulva = sea lettuce Alternation of generation adult
Codium fragile = dead man’s fingers Other local marine green algae Enteromorpha
Spirogyra spp. (1.6a) Trebouxia spp.
Protothecosis, caused by Prototheca wickerhamii or P. zopfii, is a rare infection in the US, mostly from the southwest (seen worldwide but still is rare). Treatment has not been standardized but amphotericin B & ketoconazole have been used. On skin
Rhodophyta = Red algae Chondrus crispus = irish moss carrageenan Gracilaria (& Gelidium) agar
Porphyra = nori, laver
Antithamnion Palmaria palmata
Phaeophyta = brown algae Stramenopiles?
Egregia = feather boa kelp Kelp harvesting: a local industry alginic acid/alginate Macrocystis = giant kelp Undaria = wakame
Laminaria One use Sterilized Laminaria digitatum & L. japonicum is inserted in its dry state (top of image) into the cervix. Mucopolysaccharides absorb water gradually, and the stick expands within the cervix. The lower laminaria stick shows the increase in size. The cervix dilates and the contents of the uterus can be more readily removed (such as in curettage).
Bacillariophyta = diatoms centric pennate arrangement Stephanodiscus (1.6b)
Diatom cell division
-> ASP
Oomycota = water molds biflagellated spores sexual structures
1845 Phytophthora infestans Late blight of potato Phytophthora ramorum sudden oak death
