SC.A.1.2.1 Making Measurements Today, we are going to talk about the various types of measurements. You probably already know that we can compare and measure items using a variety of devices. The student determines that the properties of materials (e.g., density and volume) can be compared and measured (e.g. using rules, balances, and thermometers).

Temperature thermometer A ______________ is the instrument used to measure temperature. There are two units of measure for temperature: Celsius Fahrenheit Degrees Celsius (°C) is the metric unit for temperature. One property that can be measured is temperature. Do you know what instrument is used to measure temperature? (Wait for student responses.) Good answer. A thermometer. Meteorologists use thermometers to determine how cold or how warm it is outside. A doctor may use a thermometer to check your temperature when you aren’t feeling well. Temperature can be measured using degrees Celsius or degrees Fahrenheit. However, degrees Celsius is the metric unit for temperature.

Length A ___________ is the instrument used to measure length. meter stick The metric unit for length is: Meter The length of an object is another property that can be observed and measured. What instrument is most commonly used to measure length? (Wait for student responses.) That is correct. The meter stick. The meter stick works the same as a ruler. It can be used to determine how long an object is, how far away something is, or the height of a person. The metric unit for length is meter.

Mass A _________ is the instrument used to measure mass. balance Can someone tell me what mass is? (Wait for student responses.) That’s right. Mass is the amount of matter in an object. What instrument can be used to measure the mass of an object? (Wait for student responses.) Excellent! A balance is the instrument used to measure and compare the mass of objects. The gram is the metric unit of measurement for mass. The metric unit for mass is: Grams

Volume A __________________ is the instrument used to measure volume. graduated cylinder Volume is another property that can be measured. Volume is the amount of space an object takes up. Please raise your hand if you can tell me what instrument should be used to measure volume. (Wait for student responses.) That’s correct. We should use a graduated cylinder. A graduated cylinder is a container, used for measuring liquids, marked with the units of volume, which is the liter. The metric unit for volume is: Liter

Instruments of Measurement What instrument can be used to measure the height of a bouncing ball? Thermometer Balance Metric Ruler Graduated Cylinder What instrument can be used to measure the mass of a rock? Thermometer Balance Metric Ruler Graduated Cylinder What instrument can be used to measure the volume of a liquid? Now that we know what each instrument measures, let’s see if you can match each measurement with the correct instrument. (Read each question as it comes up on the screen and wait for student responses.) Thermometer Balance Metric Ruler Graduated Cylinder What instrument can be used to measure the temperature of a room? Thermometer Balance Metric Ruler Graduated Cylinder

Weight and Mass How is weight and mass different? Mass is defined as the amount of matter an object has. The weight of an object depends on gravity. The mass and weight of a frog on Earth and on the Moon Many people get confused when we speak about weight and mass. They think the two are the same, but actually they are quite different. Mass is defined as the amount of matter in an object and does not change even if you leave the Earth. However, weight is solely dependent upon gravity and so an object’s weight will change depending on the force of gravity on that object. For example, a frog will have a mass of 2,721 grams on Earth and on the Moon, but its weight will change depending on where it is. The frog may weigh eight pounds here on Earth, but only 1.32 pounds on the Moon because of the difference in gravity. A frog will have a mass of 2721 grams on Earth and on the Moon. A frog will weigh 8 pounds on Earth, but 1.32 pounds on the Moon.

Density What instruments are needed to find the density of a rock? Density is how heavy something is for its size. Density is found by dividing mass by volume. Density = Mass Volume What instruments are needed to find the density of a rock? Density tells us how heavy something is for its size. The density of an object can be found by dividing the object’s mass by its volume. What instruments do we need to find the density of a rock? (Wait for student responses.) You are absolutely right. We need the balance and the graduated cylinder.
