Subject Complements There are 4 types of complements: Direct object (DO) Indirect object (IO) Predicate nominative (PN) Predicate adjective (PA)

Direct objects Completes the meaning of a transitive verb Noun or pronoun Has to be used with an action verb Answers what? or whom? after the verb May be compound Will NEVER be in a prepositional phrase

Examples: Today, I met Dr. Mason. My uncle repairs small engines, and then he sells them. We bought ribbon, paper, and tape. Augusta Savage was a sculptor. She worked with clay.

Indirect objects Completes the meaning of a transitive verb Noun or pronoun Has to be used with an action verb Will fall in between the verb and the direct object You MUST have a direct object in order to have an indirect object May be compound Will NEVER be in a prepositional phrase
