LITHIUM POLYMER BATTERIES DAVID AUSLENDER NICHOLAS FORTENBERRY

Li-Po batteries differ from traditional Li-Ions primarily due to the “polymer” electrolyte Essentially, the anode and cathode is exactly the same as Li-Ion Although a polymer electrolyte is used, a gel has to be applied for the battery to be conductive A fully solid polymer batteries were tested in the 1970s, but could only conduct electricity at 60 ℃ and above This pouch, if unprotected, can be easily damaged which can result in a fire Introduction

Applications Cell phones Laptops RC cars and planes Can be molded to fit into many different devices due to the soft polymer electrolyte Commonly seen in Apple products and other small-form laptop manufacturers The soft polymer electrolyte allows for the battery to be stored in a soft pouch, saving 20% in weight compared to the traditional hard-shell Li-Ion Has a low self-discharge rate [1] Self discharge is when an internal chemical reaction occurs that reduces the chemical potential of the battery without connections between the electrodes being made [3] [4]

Battery Science ●When charging any type of Li- Ion type battery, special protection circuitry must be used to prevent battery damage [1] [4] ●Chemical Reaction (During discharge) ○Positive Electrode: ○Negative Electrode:
