Effects and Results of the Spanish Civil War - External USA, FRANCE, BRITAIN, USSR, GERMANY AND ITALY

BritainBritain Policy of appeasement. Polarized politics in Europe. Public support increased. Fear of Fascist nations. Increased fear for another European war. The effect that the bombing of Spain had had on it’s civilians. The general suffering and terror of the Spanish people. Fear of communism. Spread of Communism still seen as the biggest threat. Hitler lost a lot of his respect for the UK and would therefore be more likely to take a more aggressive approach. Hitler

FranceFrance The war brought Fascism to both of France’s major borders. Like in the UK, the fear of another European war spread. Hitler saw France’s relative neutrality as weakness. Approximately 9000 volunteers had fought in the war (about 1000 were killed).

USAUSA Remained neutral. Strengthened the isolationist sentiment. Called for Economic sanctions against Franco in Spain was not included in the Marshall Plan. During the Cold War, US - Spanish relations improved and the first US grant since Franco’s rise to power was given in 1951.
