Confederate troops initially went to Gettysburg after learning there was a supply of shoes in the town. When they did this, they ran into Union troops and both sides called for reinforcements. The Battle was on.

Battle of Gettysburg The Battle of Gettysburg fought July 1-3, 1863 was one of the bloodiest battles of the war, over the course of three days. Fought in Pennsylvania/North This is one of the largest and most crucial battles. South had 75,000 men lead by General Lee The North had 90,000 men lead by General Meade. General Lee orders an attack at the center of the Union army. battle-of-gettysburg

Gettysburg With over 13,000 men under his control, General Pickett orders his men to make a running charge against the North. However, the Union was ready for this and was able to mow down the South with rifle and cannon fire. This is going to be known as Pickett's charge. More than 53,000 men were killed or wounded in the 3 day battle. Yes, it was a victory for the North, but Lincoln was furious. His Generals had the chance to finish off the retreating Confederate Army but did not take the opportunity.

On November 18, 1863 Northerners held a ceremony to commemorate the sacrifices of those who died. Abraham Lincoln spoke for two minutes at the ceremony, giving his most famous speech, the Gettysburg Address The Battle of Gettysburg was the turning point of the war.
