The Kid Who Climbed Everest by Bear Grylls Bear Grylls was a 21-year-old soldier in the British Army on a routine training jump when his parachute failed to open at 11,000 feet. Throughout his 8 agonizing months of rehabilitation in an Army hospital, he had one thought in mind – to see the world from the summit of the highest mountain. At the age of 23, Bear became the youngest Englishman to summit Mt. Everest. Touching the Void by Joe Simpson Climbing partners and close friends, Joe Simpson and Simon Yates, were climbing in the Andes mountains of Peru when disaster struck. Joe fell on an icy slope and broke his leg. While dangling mid-air over a 100-foot cliff, Simon was forced to cut Joe’s rope before his weight pulled him over the cliff, too. Imagine Simon’s surprise when, 3 days later, Joe crawled into base camp, frostbitten, exhausted, starving, but alive!
