Narrative Writing Beginning Middle End

Write about a time you were surprised.

Get Your Readers Hooked Create a great beginning!

We all know narratives have a beginning where you tell about: 1. when 2. where 3. who 4. what you were doing

But we want to make our beginnings exciting. We want to hook our readers!

Question Have you ever seen something that just made you laugh until your sides hurt? Well, that happened to me. It was a cold Christmas morning. I was in the kitchen with my family and we were listening to Christmas music. Ask the reader a question that relates to the topic of the paper.

Now you are ready for a middle. You will want to tell your story step by step. Don’t skip a step. Use order words such as To begin with, Next, Then, Suddenly, After that, Meanwhile. Use feeling words so you readers know how you felt.

Step by Step After my dad put the Christmas music on my dog Charlie stood tall on his two back paws. Then he started swirling around in circles and howling to the music. I was so surprised that my dog could dance. Suddenly he moved over to my dad and put his paws on my dad’s hands and they were dancing together. When I saw the two of them dancing I began to laugh so hard that my belly shook.

Finally, you are ready for your excellent ending. When you write your ending write how you felt. Did you learn anything? Would you want this to happen again?

Ending Close it Out It was very funny. We all thought that Charlie was a good dancer. I think he is ready for Dancing with the Stars.
