Welcome!

1. Take one of each handout located on the table in the front of the room. Find your assigned seat by matching the number and color card you have with the one on the desk. 2. Take a marker. Please write the name you would like to be called (not Superman or Princess, but an actual name) in large print on the folded card and place it on the corner of your desk. 3. Begin filling out the sheet labeled “Important Info, and Other Stuff.”

 I am originally from Copperas Cove, Tx.  I graduated from Texas State University with a degree in English and History.  I love reading, dancing, and listening to music.

 ABSOLUTELY YES!  Our definitions of fair will not always coincide.

 Major grades are worth 60%  Tests, projects, essays  At least 3 per 6wks  Daily grades are worth 40%  Quizzes, homework, in-class assignments, participation  At least 8 per 6wks

 Be in your assigned seat and working on the assigned bell work when the tardy bell rings.  Bring ALL books and materials to class AND take them with you when you leave.  Treat each person in this room with dignity and respect.  Follow ALL directions the FIRST time they are given.  Follow ALL procedures and policies as outlined in the HHS and Hays CISD handbooks.

 S  S – Show actions that help yourself and others learn.  A  A – Actively participate and be mentally present.  L  L – Learn and be open to new learning.  S  S – Set cell phones to OFF.  A  A – Act with a positive attitude.

 This classroom is a “No Whining Zone.” That means that there will be no whining for any reason. Everything that I do is in your best interest, so please respect the “No Whining Zone” this year. Don’t be a problem glorifier, but instead be a problem solver.  “Baby, save it for Tyra!”

 This is a non-confrontational way for me to communicate with you when you are off task.  I will fill in the offense and you will complete the rest of the form.  After class we will have a short conference to discuss the issue.

 1 st offense – Warning and Documentation  2 nd offense – Action Plan, contact parents, 30 minute Friday after school detention  3 rd offense – Disciplinary referral

Any student who uses profanity, fights, damages school property (this includes property of the teacher and other students), or is disrespectful (as defined by the teacher) will be sent to the office immediately.

 Following the guidelines will result in a stress- free environment, which will benefit our ability to learn together.

WHAT we will do and HOW we will do it.

 Wear your ID.  Please enter quietly.  Have a seat.  Take out your materials.  Review the agenda.

 Enter quietly.  Excused: Place your excuse in the basket on my desk.  Unexcused: Go get a tardy slip. Place it in the basket when you return.  Have a seat.  Take out your materials, and begin working on assignment.

 I will…  Play a few notes on the chimes  You have 4 seconds to get quiet and turn your attention to me.  Let’s practice…

 Place on all homework assignments.  Use MLA format  Example: Jane Smith Mrs. Cannon English II: 3 rd Period 24 August

If you do not bring your homework assignment to class, you will receive a pink slip.  Gives you a chance to explain why you don’t have the assignment  Written documentation for me  Turn in pink slip instead of assignment  Used as documentation in parent conferences and other meetings

 What do I do next?  Work on unfinished English assignment.  Read your “choice” novel.  Review vocabulary words.  Start working on tonight’s homework.

 Check weekly folders on front table for necessary handouts.  Look at weekly schedule on side board.  Ask a classmate for the missed assignment  AFTER doing all of these things: Ask Mrs. Cannon for details about missed assignment.  The amount of time missed is the length of time you have to make up assignments.  Ex. Miss two days=Two extra days to make up

 Please let me know as you enter the classroom. I will be at the door.  Quietly raise your hand to get my attention.  Pack your materials and leave at scheduled time.  For emergencies, quickly get my attention and I will assist you.

 Place your paper on the desk to your right.  When you receive a paper, place yours on top and continue passing the stack to your right.  When stacks reach the far right, pass your stack to the person in front of you.  When you receive a stack of papers, place yours on top and pass forward.  All papers should be in right corners.  I will come by and collect all stacks.  Let’s practice…

 We will use many different forms of discussion.  Fishbowl, think-pair-share, pairs, small group, whole class  Please participate.  I want to hear what you have to say.  All questions/comments relevant to the current discussion.  If your question is off topic, write it down and ask later.

 Hold up 3 fingers and wait for me to acknowledge you.  Not 1 or 2 – That is TMI!  I will sign your planner if appropriate timing.  You must fill out your own planner.  I will ask you to wait if not good timing.

 You must ask permission.  Do not ask during a class discussion unless it is an emergency.  Pain  Bleeding  Throwing up  Something extreme is happening

 I dismiss you, not the bell.  No packing up prior to the bell  Wait until teacher finishes and officially dismisses you with, “Have a nice day.”

 Act like the substitute does not need to be in the room.  Follow all procedures.  The assignment will be displayed on the front board.  Follow the routine.  If he/she writes your name down, you will serve a Friday after school detention with me.

 I truly believe in your potential.  I want you to believe in it too! We are going to have an awesome year! -Mrs. Cannon-
