SENTENCE VARIETY

Begin sentences with a participle (verbs ending in –ing and –ed) Sitting on the dock of the bay, we watched the tide roll away. Growing up in Mississippi during the 70s, my dad was the lone rebel in his town. Heated by the blazing sun, we wished we weren’t outside all day long.

Begin sentence with a prepositional phrase After the rain, I watched the kids play in the puddles. To the naked eye, he is a lazy man. In another world, I would earn a million dollars for being a middle school teacher.

Appositives My mom, a real estate agent in Georgia, sold 42 houses last year. Brent, a student in my language arts class, is always nice to people. McClure Middle, a school in West Cobb, is the best school in the county.

Introductory dependent clause Although I didn’t like math, I worked very hard to do my best. Because I am a 7th grade teacher, I know what it’s like to be 12 years old. If you want to be somebody else, change your mind. As the wall fell, the Germans rejoiced.
