Nazeli Manukyan Obesity: A never ending war with America

Intro: Now a days its far easier to stop by a drive thru than to stop at a grocery store for dinner. That’s what my paper looks into. How fast food industry is literally shaping our nations health and this power point along with my paper shows the figures supporting this fact. I found many statistics about the effect of eating fast food. Manly I focused on 2 research projects that are based off of eating fast food often can cause obesity and even living or going to school near a fast food restaurant will increase the chances of obesity. Super Size me Fast food restaurants near schools

BMI: Body Mass Index: Measuremen t Units Formula and Calculation Kilograms and meters Formula: weight (kg) / [height (m)]2 With the metric system, the formula for BMI is weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared. Since height is commonly measured in centimeters, divide height in centimeters by 100 to obtain height in meters. Example: Weight = 68 kg, Height = 165 cm (1.65 m) Calculation : 68 ÷ (1.65)2 = 24.98BMI Pounds and inches Formula: weight (lb) / [height (in)]2 x 703 Calculate BMI by dividing weight in pounds (lbs) by height in inches (in) squared and multiplying by a conversion factor of 703. Example: Weight = 150 lbs, Height = 5'5" (65") Calculation: [150 ÷ (65)2] x 703 = BMI BMIWeight status Below 18.5Underweigh t Normal Overweight 30 and above Obese Is the measure of weight for height: a tool for measuring weight status in adults. BMI Correlates with body fat, but does not take muscle mass into account.

Super Size Me Morgan Spurlock, a directed, wanted to know what would happened if a person just ate fast food for their 3 meals a day, and for an entire month. The rules were simple He can only eat McDonalds. He has to eat it for a month, 3 times a day. He has to eat everything on the menu at least once, including the water. Cant go over 5,000 steps, that’s what the typical American walks daily. He has to Super size his meal, if asked.

Fast food restaurants near schools The National Bureau of Economics decided to test out a theory, are children more inclined to eat fast food if its near their school? Researchers computed whether the fast food restaurants is within.10,.25 or.50 miles of the schools. They also controlled a rich set of schools and neighborhood. In the end of the test, children who had fast food restaurants within.10 miles of their school increased the probability of obesity by 5.2%. Also finding the effects of having a fast food restaurant.25 or.50 miles away from a school had no significant effect on the children.

This bar graph shows the percentage of overweight children in different countries by their BMI, the blue indicates the amount of overweight children from BMI and the red indicates the amount of obese children with a BMI of 30 and above. Malta, an island near Sicily, is number one with 27%. And not far behind is the United States with 25%.

A bar graph shows the America’s Obesity rate shown with greasy hamburgers

Over the past 25 years, the popularity of obesity has grown from less than 15% of the population to 1 in 3, as this chart demonstrates.

Conclusion The goal of theses studies were to determine if fast food was the main reason to the obesity epidemic, based on the data found that it has contributed in increasing the amount of overweight Americans. The research given has supported that eating fast food will increase obesity. However, while the majority of the nation blames the fast food. There are other reasons that can be blamed for the obesity epidemic but the nation only wants to point their fatty fingers at the fast food industries and none at themselves for consuming the food.
