Creating a Positive Team Environment

1. Set High Expectations if you expect more, you will get more be genuine and avoid false praise The classic “Pygmalion Effect”

2. Apply Consequences Fairly your actions must be consistent with your values (team policies) You are endorsing the behaviors you ignore

3. Make It Competitive/Challenging/Intense “It’s OK to compete” - push your teammates or your opponents will keep score and praise intensity - effort and energy in training should be a habit keep your team on it’s technical edge - practices should not seem easy don’t let players cut corners or downshift - know when to moderate your training patterns to get the most out of your players

4.Find and Respect Challenging Opponents get into the appropriate league/tournament environment be prepared for each and every game playing vs. your opponent AND the game

5. Consistently Evaluate Players never stop evaluating players –be willing to make changes use opportunities to start/play to motivate

For Next Time: What are some of the differences between male and female athletes and therefore coaching each?

Coaching Men vs Women

Managing Ego vs Emotion Men -stubbornly individualistic -less concerned with the team’s needs -internally motivated Women -open-minded -more willing to accept the team mission -more externally motivated

Leadership a pyramid or hierarchy vs networking -- women tend to value relationships more than men and want to be valued beyond their physical abilities

Communication Directive, aggressive vs positive and reinforcing -- women tend to communicate and interpret much more information than men

Final Word Things to think about: gender equity – equality of opportunity and fair distribution of resources sexual harassment – unwanted or offensive sexual advances, remarks, or acts
