What do ALL of these living things have in common?
Traits that increase an organism’s likelihood of survival are called… Adaptations
Explanations for Adaptations Protection against predators To help attack prey For eating or feeding Movement To suit their environment or habitat
Adaptation Categories Behavioral Organisms reaction to it’s environment Both Inherited and Acquired Traits Relationships between species Structural External characteristics Inherited traits Physiological Internal Characteristics Inherited Traits
Behavioral Adaptations
Structural Adaptations
Physiological Adaptations
EVOLUTION What does all this mean?... The right traits or adaptations allow these “chosen” organisms to survive in their environment longer than the organisms WITHOUT the traits A CHANGE in the INHERITED traits of an organism is called EVOLUTION
Darwin’s THEORY OF NATURAL SELECTION “SURVIVAL OF THE FITTEST”
Lamarck’s THEORY OF ACQUIRED CHARACTERISTICS If giraffes continually stretched their necks in order to reach high treetops for food, their necks would become longer over time, and their offspring would inherit those changes. If an organ was not used, it would decrease or disappear over time. For example, snakes did not need legs to slither through grass, so their legs became smaller over time. This is an adult giraffe. The giraffe reaches for leaves slightly out of reach. The use of the neck causes it to lengthen slightly. The offspring of the giraffe also has a longer neck.
So which is right?... Lamarck is definitely INCORRECT SOME of Darwin’s theory is supported today Simpsons meet Darwin video What we believe: The Catholic Church believes, if life did develop over time, then it did so under the stimulus and guidance of God, and their ultimate creation must be ascribed to him.
In composition notebook… Who is Darwin? What is his theory? Draw his theory in action. Who is Lamarck? What is his theory? Draw his theory in action.
Explain how the color of the moths increases or decreases their chances of survival. Explain the concept of "natural selection" using your moths as an example. What would happen if there were no predators in the forest. Would the colors of the moths change over time? Defend your answer. Propose a design for another experiment that tests moth phenotypes in a forest where there are no predators. The limiting factor is food availability for caterpillars (baby moths) and caterpillars with larger mouthparts are able to obtain food faster. What data would researchers take in this experiment to show how natural selection affects the moth populations.
