How can we use the Netbooks to facilitate online collaboration? Our Context… Broadmeadows Valley is the newly formed school as a result of the merger on Meadow Fair North, Broadmeadows West, and Jacana Primary Schools Bethal Primary School is a neighbouring school in our network. We were all interested in developing strong connections between schools and students in our network but were not sure where to start and hadn’t done much to create an authentic link.

Receiving the Netbooks creating a 1:1 24 hour access learning environment. Discussions with the team members as to how we can create links and collaborate – as per our NING conversations Decided on our pathway – Professional Development and Learning for all our staff. ENGAGE

EXPLORE Target staff were those involved in the Netbook trial to collaborate on a project. Explored web 2.0 tools – blogs, wikis, NING etc. Explored E 5 - fitted well into our learning model and became our instructional model for staff Professional Development and Learning.

EXPLAIN Decided on WIKI use as our collaboration tool STAFF: Fitted into our involvement with AIZ (Achievement Improvement Zones) and the Saturation Team Supports the planning of effective teaching and learning Builds capacity in staff Sustainable change Demonstrating our understanding and use of E 5 Instructional Model STUDENTS: Using the online tools effectively Developing their online social etiquette Formal way to communicate online that can be monitored Authentic avenue for the students to publish their writing Students gain valuable ‘critical friend’ feedback from a larger group of peers and teachers

ELABORATE Increased opportunity to collaborate within the educational precinct to deliver an effective teaching and learning curriculum Our Journey: Started with individual class wikis to learn about the tool, then unit wikis were developed. Next step was the creation of a cross school writing wiki Finally specialist programs have got on board after seeing the success we have experienced.

EVALUATE Increased awareness of online collaboration tools. Increased engagement within the educational precinct to plan and deliver effective teaching and learning. Increased participation in using these online tools for a wide variety of applications. Increased understanding of web 2.0 tools and how these can be used in our teaching and learning programs. After hours learning has become a reality for many of our students. Improved capability to personalise the learning needs of individuals. Students have actively taken on the role of the teacher with their peers and teachers.

E BBV REFLECTION ON THE PLP PROJECT: All team members report that their is a significant increase in confidence to create and use more online tools in the curriculum All team members report that through the Professional Development and Learning, and most significantly the team’s success, that more staff within their schools are seeing the potential and possible applications to their specific class needs.
