The Early Years Born Clarissa Harlow Barton on December 25, 1821 in Oxford, Massachusetts. She was a very shy child but was very smart and a fast learner. Her very first nursing job was at age 11 when she nursed her older brother David through an illness. Clara Barton School Originally built in Bordentown, NJ in 1852. Clara not only opened the school, but ran it and taught there as well. The number of students attending this free public school grew to 600 by the end of the first year alone. The school was rebuilt in 1853 to accommodate all the students. At that time, a man was hired as principal and he was given twice the salary that Clara had been making. Her Role in the Civil War She first began her Civil War efforts in 1861 by collecting and distributing supplies to the Union forces. Her first time witnessing and nursing during combat was in 1862 in Fredericksburg, VA. She was there nursing on the battlefield at Antietam. She gained the nickname “Angel of the Battlefield” for her work nursing. In 1864 she became superintendent of all Union nurses. After the War Beginning Quiz End of Show Immediately following the war, Clara went to work reuniting missing men and their families. She received over 63,000 letters from families and was able to identify over 22,000 missing men. She also helped establish a national cemetery for the men who died in Andersonville Prison in Georgia. With help, she was able to identify the graves of over 13,000 men. Clara learned about the Red Cross during a trip to Europe in 1869. She served with the Red Cross during the Franco- Prussian war.
