Aims and Objectives To share approach to E-safety within David Lewis– key findings and lessons learnt Particular focus on some of the work carried out through peer learner work

Residential Specialist College – Residential and day Students Working with learners aged Pre-entry level 2 – Level 1 Caters for epilepsy and communication disorders (Autism, fragile X, downs syndrome, Retts syndrome) The Mission is to… ‘To provide optimum transition from childhood to adulthood’ The David Lewis College

The Challenge faced? Making E safety training relevant to Learners? Parents – What support do they require? Staff – What training do they need? Bureaucracy?

Link with local Police Liaison Officer – training provided for learners, staff and Parents – linked to CEOP ambassador training CEOP – web based resource/ safety button facility placed on all computers Visual reference points around IT working areas within College Individual risk assessment around safe use Shift in thinking re: social networking led to deploying a peer approach… Strategies adopted for successful training/awareness around e-safety

Discovery that a number of learners already used facebook and they were aware of the dangers surrounding its use but other Learners wanted to but weren’t aware Implementation of peer training through Student Council The Presentation? Use of Games/ video’s and quizzes to raise profile of e-safety and it’s importance when using computers Self made video – downloaded onto In-folio e-safety tab – accessible to all learners The Peer Approach...

The Impact? Increased learner understanding around e-safety – demonstrated through learner surveys Empowered the Students (those involved in training and others too) Presentation being recorded to be used within context of Student induction whilst acting as a reference point for both Students and staff College twitter and Facebook usage increased with full endorsement (through changed policy) by IT team.
