Jewelry Design

Design Keep your design SIMPLE. Use the art elements of SHAPE & SPACE Keep in mind the interesting use of positive and negative SPACE. AVOID clichés. If you are doing a heart or a star, make yours unique! Come up with 4 possible designs. Each Design must have at least 3 openings or PIERCINGS.

Vocabulary & Tools 2. Sawing A. Bench Pin, to hold the metal piece in place while you cut. B. Saw Frame, holds the saw blade tightly while cutting. C. Saw blade is a thin piece of metal with a serrated edge for cutting. The points of the serrated edge need to face down & out.

Vocabulary & Tools D. When cutting keep the saw frame vertical. Don’t push the blade or twist it. If you do it will BREAK. 3. Filing a.We have 2 types of files, the large files are for smoothing outside edges. Always file in ONE direction, away from yourself. b.The small files are called needle files & are for smoothing inside edges in small spaces.

Continued….. Polishing 1. Polishing the metal takes several steps. The idea is to go from rough to smooth in small steps, which produces a shiny surface. First use the coarse (most rough) sandpaper. 2. Next use the fine sandpaper 3. Last use the steel wool. 4. After your piece is done, it will be placed in a tumbler.
