What is Chemistry?  Brainstorm:

What is Chemistry? Chemistry is everything. It is all around us. Def’n: Chemistry is the study of the composition and properties of matter.

What is matter? Matter has two general properties: it occupies _________________ and has ______________. The mass of an object is the quantity of matter in that object (not to be confused with weight. Weight changes as gravity changes, but mass does not).

What is matter? The space that matter occupies is called its volume. A property of matter that combines volume and mass is density.

Phases of matter:

Areas of Chemistry (only a few): Analytical Chemistry: Analyzing substances. Biochemistry: Study of living organisms. Bio Technological Chemistry: Creating and modifying genetic material. Inorganic Chemistry: Study of inorganic compounds structures and properties. Organic Chemistry: Study of carbon and it’s compounds.

Laboratory Work The Scientific Method: Scientific method is the process that scientists follow in order to perform research to investigate the world around them.

The scientific Method Word Bank: Analyze, Design, Hypothesis, Hypothesis, Observation, Perform, Question

Lab Report Outline: Title: (title of the experiment) Objective: (purpose) Hypothesis: (what you expect) Procedure: (step by step or “see procedure…”) Data: (observations and measurements) Calculations / Questions: (show work) Conclusion: (discuss findings) Possible Sources of Error: (things that may have occurred to prevent precise or accurate results)

Lab Report Rubric A (100%-80%) B (80%-60%) C (60%-50%) D (50% or less) Purpose /2 Purpose describes the reason for doing the experiment Purpose describes part of the reason for the experiment Purpose doesn’t describe the reason for doing the experiment no purpose Hypothesis /3 Hypothesis is educated, gives expectations and relates to purpose Hypothesis is uneducated or unrelated to the purpose Hypothesis is uneducated and tfvbunrelated to the purpose No hypothesis Materials and Procedure /2 Materials / Procedure are referenced properly Reference has an error in reference Reference is incorrectly referenced No procedure or materials Data and Observations /15 Observations are detailed and include information of before during and after the experiment Observations are not detailed or don’t include information from before, during and after the reaction Observations are not detailed and don’t include information from before, during, or after reaction Observations do not exist

Rubric Analysis /15 Analysis explains observations, and answers questions Analysis answers questions but doesn’t completely explain observations Analysis does not explain observations and questions are answered incorrectly Analysis contains very little analytical information or does not exist Conclusion /5 Answers purpose, relates to hypothesis and is correct. Answers purpose or relates to hypothesis and is correct Doesn’t answer purpose/ hypothesis, or is incorrect Doesn’t exist Sources of Error /3 Has more than 2 correct sources of error Has 2 correct sources of error Has less than 2 correct sources of error Has no sources of error Format /5 Neat, headings, ruler used, name and partner (s) included. Neat, but may not be formatted properly A little messy but proper formatting Messy and not properly formatted.
