THE OUR FATHER By Isabella Wherby 9.3

Our Father

Purpose within the text You are addressing this prayer to God. He is the father of everything and everyone on this earth. This is relevant to us because we go to our parents for help and support and we can talk to them about anything, this is the same with God.

Who art in Heaven

Purpose within the text That God is above us in heaven. This line follows on from the last by addressing this prayer to God who lies in heaven. This line helps us believe that there is something after life. Also it helps us believe that God is watching us and protecting us.

Hallowed be thy name

This line is saying that God is greater than anyone else. This line applies to us because we put all our faith in God and we respect him and love him more than anyone else. Purpose within the text

Thy kingdom come

Purpose within the text This line is saying that when we die we want God to let us into heaven, this line also means that we should bring the good of heaven to earth. This is relevant to us today because we know that there are consequences for our wrongs and that if we lead good lives we will be rewarded.

Thy will be done

Purpose within the text This line means living our lives as God wants us to. This relevant because as Catholics we try to lead good lives and live the way god has taught us to.

On earth as it is in heaven

Purpose within the text This line means that we want our lives to be as heavenly as they would in heaven. As heaven is perfect God is trying to make a perfect world on earth. This is relevant to us because we do what God says and we want him to guide us through our lives and make them better.

Give us this day our daily bread

Purpose within the text This line means that we are asking God to give us the things we need to live good lives, such as love, forgiveness, guidance, trust and compassion. This relates to our everyday lives because we want to live our lives the right way.

And forgive us our trespasses

Purpose within the text This line means we want God to forgive us for our sins. This relates to our everyday lives because we want God to love us and accept us, and by forgiving us we are able to live our lives in peace.

As we forgive those who trespass against us;

Purpose within the text This line means we are asking God to help us forgive the people who have made bad decisions or wronged us in the past. This relates to our everyday lives because in order for us to be forgiven for our wrongs we have to forgive others, and once we can forgive others we know we are living as God wants us to.

And lead us not into temptation

Purpose within the text This line means that we are asking God to help us make good choices and steer us in the right direction, we are asking him to make sure we lead good lives. This relates to our everyday lives because we want to live good lives and not be steered in the wrong direction.

But deliver us from evil.

Purpose within the text This line means that we are asking God to keep us safe from harm and bad people and things in life. This relates to our everyday lives because all society cares about is material items and as Catholics we want to live our lives the good and pure way.

Amen

Purpose within thetext The word Amen means truth and verity. When we say Amen we are saying, “yes Iagree with that, I believe that to be true, Iwant that to be so”.This relates to our everyday lives becausewe put a lot of our faith into prayer and wehope that someone will hear our prayersand help us.
