Marco Polo’s Eastern Great Sea The Western Great Sea Option 1 Option 2 Option 3

Option 1: Overland (Marco Polo’s Route) -Followed the Silk Road -Took over two years -Very dangerous and slow, hard to carry lots of stuff -Very expensive to pay for protection and workers to carry everything.

Option 2: Around Africa (De Gama’s Route) The Portuguese believed that sailing around Africa was the best route to India. Shortest distance by sea, but very dangerous waters. Vasco De Gama finally made it in 1498.

Option 3: Off the Edge (Columbus’ Plan) Columbus plans to sail west from Europe to India. He thinks the sea east of India is the same as the one west of Europe.
