Respiratory System Created by: Emma, Nichole, Alex and Eddie.

Function - The basic function of the respiratory system is to, mediate the movement of air in and out of the body.

System Parts Posteirer Nasal Cavity Pharynx Voice Box Wind Pipe Chest Bronchi Alveoli

Inhale Oxygen enters through function of diaphragm. Oxygen then travels to the lungs through the bronchi. The oxygen filters through the alveoli walls and is absorbed into the capillaries which carry blood throughout the body.

Exhale Carbon Dioxide is exhaled out by abdominal and internal intercostal muscles. Thus, completing the cycle from oxygen to carbon dioxide.

Facts The average person will take 8-10 breaths per minute. The reason we yawn? To get more oxygen to our bodies in one breath. A sneeze is a cough for our upper breathing passages, to remove irritants. Hiccups are sudden movements of the diaphragm, they have many causes like eating to fast.

Asthma Asthma- “Asthma is a chronic condition involving the respiratory system in which the airway occasionally constricts, becomes inflamed, and is lined with excessive amounts of mucus” Causes- includes upper respiratory infection, stress, airborne allergens, air pollutants, or exercise. Treatment- The most common treatment for asthma control is an inhaler (puffer).

Other Respiratory Illness Lung Cancer Bronchitis Pneumonia Croup Emphysema Hyaline Membrane Disease SARS (severe acute respiratory syndrome )
