John 6:60-69

 Jesus is teaching about his being manna from heaven & many disciples turn back from him.

◦ But, Peter, speaking for the Twelve, refuses to leave.

 Jesus is teaching about his being manna from heaven & many disciples turn back from him. ◦ But, Peter, speaking for the Twelve, refuses to leave. ◦ The text makes it abundantly clear that it’s because of Jesus’ words that the crowds leave & the disciples stay.

 This demonstrates that people react differently to Jesus’ words.

◦ “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household” (Mt 10:34-36, ESV).

◦ Why would a Christian have enemies in his own household unless some refused to follow Jesus?

 These different reactions also demonstrate the power of Jesus’ words.

◦ “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (1 Tm 3:16, ESV).

 These different reactions also demonstrate the power of Jesus’ words. ◦ “All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness” (1 Tm 3:16, ESV). ◦ “The word of God is living and active, sharper than any two- edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart” (Heb 4:12, ESV).

v 60

 “When many of his disciples heard it, they said, “This is a hard saying; who can listen to it?” (v 60, ESV)

 Jesus had just said some difficult things to his disciples.

◦ “‘I am the living bread that comes down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat’” (vv 51-52, ESV).

And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat’” (vv 51-52, ESV). ◦ “Whoever feeds on my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day” (v 54, ESV).

 Those who first heard these words apparently thought in terms of cannibalism.

◦ They disputed how Jesus could give them his flesh to eat (v 52).

 Those who first heard these words apparently thought in terms of cannibalism. ◦ They disputed how Jesus could give them his flesh to eat (v 52). ◦ Cannibalism was universally abhorred in the Greco-Roman world. ◦ The Lord’s Supper caused many opponents of Christianity to charge Christians with cannibalism in the first century.

 Jesus explains that he doesn’t mean cannibalism at all.

◦ “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (v 63, ESV).

 Jesus explains that he doesn’t mean cannibalism at all. ◦ “It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life” (v 63, ESV). ◦ Jesus tells his hearers that he’s speaking spiritually, not literally.

 Sometimes the words of Jesus are difficult because they are misunderstood.

◦ Why would Jesus speak in easily misunderstood terms instead of telling his disciples precisely what he meant?

 Sometimes the words of Jesus are difficult because they are misunderstood. ◦ Why would Jesus speak in easily misunderstood terms instead of telling his disciples precisely what he meant?  I’m persuaded it has to do with true faith.

 Sometimes the words of Jesus are difficult because they are misunderstood. ◦ Why would Jesus speak in easily misunderstood terms instead of telling his disciples precisely what he meant?  I’m persuaded it has to do with true faith.  Jesus wanted his disciples to be able to trust what he said without understanding all the particulars.

 Abraham demonstrated that kind of faith.

◦ “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going” (Heb 11:8, ESV).

 Abraham demonstrated that kind of faith. ◦ “By faith Abraham obeyed when he was called to go out to a place that he was to receive as an inheritance. And he went out, not knowing where he was going” (Heb 11:8, ESV). ◦ “By faith Abraham, when he was tested, offered up Isaac, and he who had received the promises was in the act of offering up his only son, of whom it was said, ‘Through Isaac shall your offspring be named.’ He considered that God was able even to raise him from the dead” (Heb 11:17-19, ESV).

 The words of Jesus are often difficult.

◦ “I say to you that everyone who is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment” (Mt 5:22, ESV).

v 66

 “After this many of his disciples turned back and no longer walked with him” (v 66, ESV).

 At various points in his ministry, Jesus had many followers.

◦ “Great crowds accompanied him” (Lk 14:25, ESV).

 At various points in his ministry, Jesus had many followers. ◦ “Great crowds accompanied him” (Lk 14:25, ESV). ◦ “The Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John” (Jn 4:1, ESV).

 Many turn back from Jesus because of his difficult words.

◦ When Jesus told a rich young man to sell all he had & give to the poor, “the young man... went away sorrowful, for he had great possession” (Mt 19:22, ESV).

 Many turn back from Jesus because of his difficult words. ◦ When Jesus told a rich young man to sell all he had & give to the poor, “the young man... went away sorrowful, for he had great possession” (Mt 19:22, ESV). ◦ “The ones on the rock are those who, when they hear the word, receive it with joy. But these have no root; they believe for a while, and in time of testing fall away” (Lk 8:13, ESV).

vv 67-69

 “So Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘Do you want to go away as well?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God’” (vv 67-69, ESV).

 Jesus asks the Twelve if they want to leave, too.

◦ Why would Jesus even ask this question?

 Jesus asks the Twelve if they want to leave, too. ◦ Why would Jesus even ask this question?  He knows the answer!

 Jesus asks the Twelve if they want to leave, too. ◦ Why would Jesus even ask this question?  He knows the answer! “Jesus knew from the beginning who those were who did not believe, and who it was who would betray him” (v 64, ESV).

 But, Jesus is giving the Twelve an opportunity to choose.

◦ Would they continue to follow Jesus – even if they might not understand everything he taught – or, would they turn back?

 But, Jesus is giving the Twelve an opportunity to choose. ◦ Would they continue to follow Jesus – even if they might not understand everything he taught – or, would they turn back? ◦ I’m convinced that Jesus is asking us this same question.

 That was the decision Joshua laid before the Israelites.

◦ “Choose this day whom you will serve” (Josh 24:15, ESV).

 That was the decision Joshua laid before the Israelites. ◦ “Choose this day whom you will serve” (Josh 24:15, ESV). ◦ Joshua “threw down the gauntlet” & told his countrymen to choose.

 Peter answers Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

 Peter says, “Lord, there’s no one else for us to follow!”

 Jesus has the words of eternal life.

 Peter says, “Lord, there’s no one else for us to follow!”  Jesus has the words of eternal life. ◦ “I have not spoken on my own authority, but the Father who sent me has himself given me a commandment—what to say and what to speak. And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me” (Jn 12:49-50, ESV).

And I know that his commandment is eternal life. What I say, therefore, I say as the Father has told me” (Jn 12:49-50, ESV). ◦ “Truly, truly, I say to you, if anyone keeps my word, he will never see death” (Jn 8:51, ESV).

Do you need to begin following Jesus?
