John 6:60-69

 This demonstrates that people react differently to Jesus’ words.

◦ “Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. And a person’s enemies will be those of his own household” (Mt 10:34-36, ESV).

 Jesus had just said some difficult things to his disciples.

◦ “‘I am the living bread that comes down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever. And the bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh.’ The Jews then disputed among themselves, saying, ‘How can this man give us his flesh to eat’” (vv 51-52, ESV).

 Those who first heard these words apparently thought in terms of cannibalism.

 “So Jesus said to the Twelve, ‘Do you want to go away as well?’ Simon Peter answered him, ‘Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God’” (vv 67-69, ESV).

 But, Jesus is giving the Twelve an opportunity to choose.

 That was the decision Joshua laid before the Israelites.

 Peter answers Jesus, “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life, and we have believed, and have come to know, that you are the Holy One of God.”

 Peter says, “Lord, there’s no one else for us to follow!”
