District Training Program 3 Characteristics of an Adult Learner Realistic—Information that is immediately applicable. Practical—Hands-on practice. Experienced—Insights. Unique—Backgrounds. Set in their learning pattern—They’re in a continual state of learning. They are self- directed and prefer to control their learning experiences. Busy—Competing interests (family, work).

District Training Program 4 Learning Retention Learner is passive—lectures, reading, audiovisual presentations, demonstrations Learner is involved—discussion, practice, teaching others

District Training Program 6 How to achieve maximum retention Capture your learner’s attention. Repeat information. Transfer information to real life. Feature a mix of activities.

District Training Program 7 Establish a positive relationship with participants Greet participants. Make eye contact. Set behavior guidelines. Give participants the option to pass on or opt out of any activity. Summarize points made before moving on to the next subject. Try not to read directly from your notes. Post a small clock where you can see it.
