Why do they speak French? Only parts of Canada are French speaking, mainly Quebec, Montreal & North Ontario. As the French invaded Canada in the 15th century, and colonised a small island called Sable Island. The French were led by a man called Pierre Du Guast who then led a few colonising expeditions across Canada and took over more areas, and by about 1605 he owned all of what was then called 'New France'

Montreal, in Quebec also has a ice hockey team called the Montreal Canadiens but are also known as the "Le Habitants Le Canadiens"which translated to The Settlers of Canada.

French Canadian folklore Popular characters in French Canadian folklore include a hero figure named Ti-Jean (short for petit Jean, or Little John) and a hunter named Dalbec.
