One day, every student from Scioto County will have the financial resources to attend the college or university of his or her choice! The Vision of UCAN:

What is UCAN? The University/College Access Network program is dedicated to providing financial assistance for our local youth to attend college.

UCAN Endowing school scholarship funds Supporting local school districts in establishing/expanding their AP Class offerings Creating a centralized scholarship database for Scioto County youth Developing a marketing campaign focused upon the importance of saving for college i.e. 529 savings plan Has four unique components:

UCAN: How it works School district signs a letter of intent to participate in the program Schools establish or choose a school endowment fund to participate in UCAN (There can be only one “official” fund to participate) School board adopts a resolution to participate in the program Follow other guidelines as set by the Scioto Foundation Endowment funds

UCAN: How it works Challenge/Matching grants program The Scioto Foundation has pledged $550,000 for the next five years ($110,000 per year) to support its matching grants program Beginning in September of 2008, the Scioto Foundation began offering a 1:1 match for donations to the school endowment fund. However, there is a $10,000 limit per school district. Endowment funds

UCAN: How it works Endowment funds The Foundation will offer a once per year planning retreat (one-day) in order to: Set annual fundraising activities Review previous fundraising activities In addition, the Foundation will offer at least one training program per year on a “fundraising topic” Road maps

UCAN: How it works SF will offer annual mini-grants to local school districts for: Stipends to cover the costs of student’s AP exams as well as PSAT/ACT/SAT exams Work with SSU & SCOESC to offer Pre-AP training for staff and faculty of the participating school districts AP Classes

UCAN: How it works SF has acquired the services of Miami University’s Center for Public Management and Regional Affairs as a consultant to develop, and establish a “scholarship central” locator for Scioto County SF will link it to is existing web site: Centralized Scholarship Database

UCAN Timeline September 1, 2008 – June 5, 2009 challenge grant period begins – one year to acquire $10,000 match September 1, 2008 – September 1, 2009, Development of scholarship database AP Summer Institute – (2009) Shawnee State University has been awarded a wonderful grant to offer AP Teacher Certification AT NO COST to participants! Marketing/Educational campaign for college savings plans

What can I do to participate? Encourage your students to attend college! Talk with community leaders, parents and others about what the program can do for our children! Contribute to my school fund. Share the vision!

Thank You for wanting to making a difference (740) 353.GIVE Kim Cutlip, Executive Director
