Learning Objectives  Understand how to research and create a supplement.  Be able to research a condition and write a report.

Focus of Seminar  Requirements for project  Progress of your project  Q & A  Case study: Vitamer Labs, “How’d they do that? The making of a dietary supplement” (Today’s Dietitian, April 2008)

Final ATP Project Description  Designed to show your knowledge of how to apply what you have learned into practice.  You will create your own supplement.  Choose a disease state or condition that you want to help resolve.  Create your ideal supplement product that you could manufacture to be sold in stores. 

Final ATP Project Requirements  Vitamins & minerals (2), accessory nutrients and/or herbs (3). There needs to be at least 5 ingredients in your product.  Explain the rationale for choosing each ingredient.  Any potential contraindications or concerns that someone may have in taking this product.

Final ATP Project Requirements  Dosages (how many times per day, quantities)  Forms of nutrient.  What would you include on the label and why.  Include information from at least two reference texts and on-line resources.  Present supplement as a 5 page double-spaced report with a separate cover and reference page.

What condition do you want to resolve?  Depression  Weight loss  Anxiety  Fibromyalgia  Sport enhancement  Irritable bowel syndrome  Heart disease  Sleep disorders  Etc

What references will you use?  Utilize the health sciences resource room.  Use peer-reviewed journals, government, and education websites.  Check out the Webliography.  Do not use commercial websites such as or Wikipedia  Use your texts if you want.

If you need help just ask!  Send an to the entire class on the condition you have chosen.  Use the DB to ask your classmates and me for input, ideas, and feedback.  Don’t wait until the last minute!  Project is due at midnight ET on Tuesday.
