Teachings from the Qur’an and Hadith

The Qur’an is the holy book of Islam. Muslims believe the Qur’an is the book of God’s guidance and direction for mankind. Muslims consider the original Arabic text to be the final revelation of God. Islam says that the Qur’an was revealed to Muhammad by the angel Gabriel over a period of 23 years. The Qur’an was written down by Muhammad's followers while he was alive, although most early teaching was done orally.

The Hadith and The Sunnah The Hadith is a collection of the sayings about the actions of Muhammad. The Sunnah is a record of the way Muhammad lived his life which should serve as an example to Muslims. The concepts are very similar, but not identical.,

Diet “Forbidden to you (for food) are: dead meat, blood the flesh of swine, and that, on which hath been invoked [called on, prayed] the name of other than God…” Qur’an V:3

Prayer “Ibrahim b. Yazid al-Taymi (may God be pleased with him) reported that the Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) said: The Earth is a mosque for you, so wherever you are at the time of prayer, pray there.” From the Hadith

Dress for Women “And say to the believing women that they should lower their gaze and guard their modesty; that they should not display their beauty and ornaments except what (must ordinarily) appear…” Qur’an VVIV:31

Alcohol “Satan’s plan is (but to excite enmity [anger] and hatred between you, with intoxicants [alcohol] and gambling, and hinder you from the remembrance of God and from prayer: Will ye not then abstain [hold back]?” Qur’an V:91

Courteousness “When a (courteous) greeting is offered you, meet it with a greeting still more courteous, or (at least) of equal courtesy. God takes careful account of all things.” Qur’an IV:86

Charity “O ye who believe! Give of things Which ye have (honorably) earned, And of the fruits of the earth Which We have produced…” Qur’an II:267

Forgiveness “Say: O my Servants who have transgressed [sinned] against their souls! Despair [lose hope] not to the Mercy of God: for God forgives all sins: for He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful.” Qur’an XXXIX:23

Respect for Parents “Thy Lord hath decreed that ye worship none but Him, and that ye be kind to parents… Say not to them a word of contempt [scorn], nor repel them, but address them in terms of honor,” Qur’an XVII:23
