The history of music videos Louise Norton

1965 Music videos all began in 1965 when the Beatles filmed the first music video called ‘A Hard Day’s Night’ from this they filmed 10 short films to promote their album releases, it was from then on that music video promotion started.

1981 It was in 1981 when MTV launched and the music video ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ by The Buggles was aired on MTV and was the first video to be shown.

1983 Michael Jackson released Thriller the most successful and influential video of all time, selling over 9 million units and in 2006 Guinness World Records named it as the most successful music video.

1985 VH1 ‘Video Hits One’ was launched which featured softer music videos which was aimed at an older audience, this also widened the amount of people that were watching music videos.

1988 Hip Hop Growth, hip hop became increasingly popular when MTV launched the show ‘YO! MTV Raps’ The band public enemy released ‘Night of the Living Baseheads’ this broke new ground presenting music as a form of cultural expression for artists in the world of hip hop.

1995 In 1995 the most expensive music video ever was produced costing 7 million pound and was by the Jacksons called ‘Scream’

2010 In 2010 hit pop star Lady Gaga had 1 billion views on her music videos, and her song ‘Poker face’ had a staggering 375 million views

Distribution The ways in which a music video is distributed plays an important role within the industry, without music videos the fans would not be able to access the video. Music videos are often playing a huge part in wether a song is successful, the more ways a music video is distributed the better chance it has of doing well. There are a number of ways in which music videos are distributed these include... TV (MTV, VH1) Internet (Youtube, Myspace) Itunes DVD

Influences After looking at a variety of music videos I feel that there are a ways that they could influence me. I have seen that most videos keeps the actions to the beat of the music and try to portray the real meaning of the song and lyrics. I will consider this when creating my music video. I have looked at Usher as an influence, his video ‘More’ is upbeat and contains a lot of quick paced shots keeping in time with the beat of the song. Ne-yo is another artist i have looked at, in his videos he often starts the video off with a scene which is an idea that i have for my music video, i think this is good as it adds to an introduction to the video. He also uses a lot of low key lighting in some parts of the video which i also think is good as it sets up an atmosphere which matches with the song.videos he often starts the video off with a scene
