Bethsaida Nazareth Caesarea Samaria Joppa Jericho Jerusalem Gaza Sea of Galilee Dead Sea Jordan River MediterraneanSea NASA PHOTO © EBibleTeacher.com CaesareaPhilippiSidon Tyre Capernaum New Testament Israel His Work in Galilee  Publicly confronted Pharisees (Mark 7:1-16)  Healed a demon- possessed man (Mark 5)  Preached sermon on the mount (Matthews 5, 6, 7; See Mark 1:22)  Fame spread rapidly in Galilee (Mark 1:27-28)

 Position, title  Knowledge  Ability  Responsibility  Power, authority  Purpose, mission

 What is wanted/expected of me?  What do I want/expect from this person?  What if I agree, or decline?  What if I succeed, or disappoint? Do I want a further relationship?

 John the Baptist, Elijah, one of the prophets (8:28; see Mark 6:14-16)  The son of David (Matt. 12:23; see Matt. 9:27, 21:9)  One sent from God (John 9:28-33)  The Prophet; possibly the Christ (John 7:40-41)  These are reverent, thoughtful responses (although they fall short of the true identify of the Lord.)

 A commoner, delusional or uppity (Mark 3:21; Mark 6:1-3)  An insignificant Galilean (John 7:40-43, 52)  A servant of Beelzebub (Mark 3:22; Matthews 12:24)  A lawbreaker, insurrectionist, and rabble-rouser (Luke 23:2, 5)  These responses were common at the time, and have remained common in the past 2,000 years.

(secular, irreverent, short-sighted, unspiritual, profane… but not necessarily irreligious; would not have though themselves an enemy)  A curiosity; someone to exploit for show (Luke 23:8)  Someone whose mission was to make everything fair (Luke 12:13-14)  Someone whose mission was to heal sick people (Luke 17:11-18)  Someone whose mission was to provide free food (John 6:24-27) Note the follow-up questions: v Similar answers continue today.

 Godless enemies: fake, phony, creation of overzealous or cunning disciples, dangerous, bad for people.  Religious enemies: “just” one of the prophets, “just” one of the gospels. Inferior to later revelations.  Worldly, misguided friends: o Community organizer o Champion of social justice o Champion of diversity o Champion of hospitals and health care  The importance of charity cannot be overlooked! James 2:14-17; Matthew 5:16  But Jesus is much more than just a charitable doer of good things!
