Title: Structure of an atom L.O.: SWBAT describe the structure of an atom.
Compounds Most elements in nature are found combined to other elements. A compound is a pure substance made of two or more different elements chemically combined in a set ratio. A compound may be represented by a chemical formula, which shows the elements in the compound and the ratio of atoms. For example: H₂O The ratio of hydrogen atoms to oxygen atoms is 2 to 1.
Compound Review – Remember the Shells? When elements are chemically combined, they form compounds having properties that are different from those of the uncombined elements. Example Calcium (solid) + Carbon (solid) + Oxygen (gas) = Calcium Carbonate
What is an atom? Matter “stuff” Made up of compounds Made up of elements Made up of atoms Atom Basic particle of which all elements are made.

All atoms have the same basic structure with the same three components. 3 components of an ATOM Protons Neutrons Electrons What three particles make up an atom? Share with the members of your group. p n
Where is each particle found? Atom Protons Found in the center (or nucleus) of the atom. Neutrons Electrons Found constantly moving around the nucleus. p n
What does an atom look like? + + NUCLEUS (Protons and Neutrons) CLOUD OF ELECTRONS (electrons)
Draw and label the chart as shown below. What are the three particles that make up an atom? PARTICLE SYMBOL CHARGE MASS PROTON NEUTRON ELECTRON
Each component is has a symbol. PARTICLE SYMBOL CHARGE MASS PROTON p+ NEUTRON n ELECTRON e-
Each component can be categorized by their charge. PARTICLE SYMBOL CHARGE MASS +1 PROTON p+ NEUTRON n ELECTRON e- -1
Each particle has a specific mass. SYMBOL CHARGE MASS (amu) PROTON p+ +1 1 NEUTRON n 1 ELECTRON e- -1 ~ 0 (Nearly 0)
Pair-Share Proton, Neutron, or Electron It is the particle of an atom represented by the symbol (n). Neutron It is the particle of an atom with no charge.
Pair-Share Proton, Neutron, or Electron It is the particle of an atom with a mass of zero. Electron This particle has a charge of +1. Proton
Pair-Share Proton, Neutron, or Electron Name the two particles with a mass of 1(amu). Proton and Neutron It is the particle that is represented by the symbol e-. Electron
Pair-Share Proton, Neutron, or Electron It is the particle of an atom with a negative charge. Electron The two particles located in the nucleus of an atom. Protons and Neutrons
In your notes, draw a model of the following... Draw a model of an atom. Label the following: Protons Neutrons Electrons Nucleus e e e e p n p
Summary Write a paragraph (3-4 sentences) reflecting on today’s lesson. What is an atom? What makes up an atom? What symbols are used to describe an atoms components?
