April 2009 © Siemens AG / All rights reserved Page 3 Siemens research series on “Sustainable Urban Infrastructure” -- Contributing to the debate  Research undertaken by independent partners (e.g. McKinsey & Company, The Economist Intelligence Unit, Wuppertal Institute for Climate, Environment and Energy) in cooperation with Siemens  Evaluation fields:  Cities’ most pressing infrastructure needs  Ways towards greater urban sustainability  Technological levers for increased resource efficiency  Economic implications Research on sustainable urban infrastructure Approach

June About the Survey  Online survey of 140 cities, from late April to mid-May 2009  Questionnaire developed by USCM, together with Siemens and GlobeScan  Respondents represent a good mix of US cities

June Key Findings  Single greatest infrastructure challenge – raised by three in five respondents (59%) - is obtaining the funding to meet infrastructure needs  Transportation (including streets/highways and public transit) is area of infrastructure that cities would most like to see targeted by stimulus funding  Respondents identify improvements to public transportation as the most promising policy measure for cities to reduce their contribution to climate change  One-third of cities within the same region are already seeing greater collaboration due to the economic crisis and climate change

June Most Serious Challenge Facing City’s Infrastructure Unprompted, Combined Mentions, 2009 Financing for infrastructure is greatest top of mind challenge Importance of transportation challenges becomes clear through subsequent questions – but not high top of mind

June Expected Impact of Stimulus Packages on City Infrastructure Budget Over Next Five Years 2009

June Infrastructure Priorities for Stimulus Spending Combined Mentions, 2009 Transportation, followed by storm water infrastructure are highest on “wish list” for stimulus spending

June Infrastructure Priorities for Stimulus Funding Top Responses, Combined Mentions, 2009 Slightly differing priorities among smaller versus larger cities, especially on the perceived need to invest in public versus private (streets/highways) transportation, and improving energy efficiency of buildings

June Most Promising Technologies for Reducing Climate Change Combined Mentions, 2009

June Most Promising Transportation Policies for Reducing Climate Change Combined Mentions, 2009 Sustainable mobility initiatives resonate strongly with cities as promising policy measures against climate change

12 North Americans Are Among Those Least Likely to Use Public Transportation Percentage of Consumers Using Transit by Frequency, 2009 Americans are among the least likely to use public transit. Major differences across countries

June Most Promising Transportation Policies for Reducing Climate Change Impact Combined Mentions, 2009

June Most Important Inputs for Cities to Reduce Climate Change Top Responses, Combined Mentions, 2009
