I-Light Network Caroline Weilhamer Manager of Services and Support June 28, 2012

What is I-Light? It is a high-speed fiber optic network that connects Indiana member sites to state, national, and international research and education communities

How Do Members Benefit? Affordable and flexible network Last mile connectivity is maintained by I-Light Commercial internet and Research and Education network connectivity is diverse…more than one path and provider. Collaboration opportunities within the community regionally and nationally Grant opportunities…like the BTOP/NTIA opportunity

Ivy Tech BTOP Update 15 Sites Completed 6 Sites in Construction Project Completion Spring 2013 Hanover College Franklin College

Dark Versus Lit…What is the Difference ? Cost o Fiber is more expensive to build or lease as a rule. o Cost must be a factor when looking into long term solutions o Lit solutions are fiber solutions that are “lit” by a vendor Availability o Geographically is there fiber in member’s area o If there is fiber, is anyone willing to lease their fiber for a year span? o If a vendor can provide lit service in the area is it the more cost effective solution? Flexibility o Fiber is easier to upgrade capacity thus making it the most flexible option o Lit solutions must be upgraded through the vendor. I want to stress that everyone on I-Light whether through a vendor circuit or through dark fiber connects directly to the I-Light backbone

What makes I-Light Different? Procure last mile connectivity for members with dark fiber or a lit service by a vendor. Maintain fiber and hardware on the network Work directly with vendors on network problem resolution via the GRNOC Network engineers that work directly with members We have 24x7x365 engineering and NOC support Connectivity to the Indiana Gigapop currently at 2 x 10G

What does all this mean? It means that the I-Light Network is dedicated to providing a high-speed network that connects everyone to the regional, national and international research and educational networks and saving each member on their commercial internet service so they can meet all the needs of their institutional goals.
