The Father of Physics Sir Isaac Newton

Physics: The branch of science that studies matter, energy, motion, and force and their interactions. What is Physics?

Physics Definition Term Components Matter - A substance that possesses mass. Energy – The capacity to cause motion. Motion – The process of movement Force – A push or pull

Fundamental Quantities Matter, Space, and Time are fundamental quantities. They can not defined In terms of other quantities Fundamental quantity – a measurable quantity that can not be defined in terms of other measurable quantities. (Example: Temperature)

Units Fundamental Unit – a unit that can not be expressed in terms of other measurable quantities. (Ex. second, kilogram, meter, Celsius). Derived unit - A combination of fundamental units that results in a new unit of a measurable quantity. (Ex.: m/s, m/s 2, m 3, g/cm 3, kgm/s 2 ). SI (International System) – the standard unit used for measurement of a quantity in the metric system. (Ex: Speed can be measured in km/hr but the SI unit for speed is m/s.) The SI unit for mass is kg. The SI unit for length is m. The SI unit for time is second. The SI unit for density is kg/m 3. Two systems of units: Metric (SI) and English (British) System. The metric system is divided into the MKS system and CGS system. MKS: meters (length), kilograms (mass), seconds (time) CGS: centimeters (length), grams (mass), seconds (time) MKS and CGS units are not to be mixed.

Base unit – a unit without any prefixes (ex: meter, gram, second, byte, Hertz) Metric prefixes – a modifier of a base unit by 10 x x is an integer. Metric Prefixes
