What is good for academic integrity is good for learning Patricia Dinneen Director, University Teaching & Learning Center Patricia Dinneen, University Teaching & Learning Center

Why do students cheat? Ambiguous attitudes among students Institutional apathy Lack clear understanding of what cheating is (e.g. shared homework, padding bibliographies, getting exam questions ahead of time, improper citation) Self-interest (it’s their investment in an education) Cultural ideas Source: online (4/22/14). Cheating in College: Where It Happens, Why Students Do It, and How to Stop It. Huffington Post. Patricia Dinneen, University Teaching & Learning Center

Suggestions Repeat your academic honesty policy often (Use SafeAssign) Don’t ask what students can Google, and assume Google is a moving target Use scenarios, cases, and activities when possible. Consider problems over time, with increasing sophistication (repeated testing) Ask similar but not identical questions Provide, rather than ask students for, scenarios so that you know the details and can ask probing questions Include an oral defense Have many assignments (grade with annotations; spot check) Ask personal questions early to provide a context for later writings Patricia Dinneen, University Teaching & Learning Center
