 After this presentation, the learner will: -Be able to identify risk factors for childhood and adolescent obesity related to nursing -Be able to identify potential complications related to childhood and adolescent obesity -Be able to identify healthy eating plans for children and adolescents -Explain strategies nurses can make to prevent or reduce childhood obesity Seminar Objectives

Introduction  Childhood obesity is an epidemic that is causing many health problems for children and adolescents.  One third of children and adolescents were overweight in 2012 in the United States (Center for Disease Control (CDC), 2014).  Most of the health problems associated with being overweight and obese will follow children and adolescents into adulthood (CDC, 2014). How is Childhood and adolescent obesity relevant to nursing:

It can be difficult for children to make healthy food choices and get enough physical activity when they are exposed to environments in  Schools  Media  Daycare  Environment Interferences & Implications

 Discuss healthy habits  Support a healthy lifestyle  Obesity prevention and treatment strategies  Promote healthful food choices and increased physical activity  Direct funding toward (Obesity Society,2014). Interferences and Implications

Consequences If children are overweight, obesity in adulthood is likely to be more severe.  Obese children are more likely to become obese adults. Adult obesity is associated with a number of serious health conditions including heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. Approximately one in every three children are overweight or obese. Being overweight or obese has many different risk factors as well as causes (Staff 2013). of Childhood Obesity
