Response Journal Prompts The Diary of Anne Frank Response Journal Prompts

Act I, Scene 2 Title: _________________ Every group seems to have one person who holds the group together. Who does that person seem to be for the characters in the play? Explain how you know.

Act I, Scene 3 Title: ________________ When people live closely together, conflicts will come up from time to time. Describe one of the conflicts in the attic. How do the characters in this conflict react? In your experience, what is the best way to react in a conflict? What is the worst way?

Act I, Scene 4 Title: ________________ Mr. Frank tells Anne that she must build her own character, and Anne responds that she is trying. (pg. 736) How does someone build his/her own character? How is Anne trying? What do you do to “build your character.”

Act I, Scene 5 Title: ________________ The families celebrate Hanukkah just like they would in normal circumstances. How does following traditions help when things are stressful or frightening? How does it help the Franks and Van Daans? What traditions do you follow that help you?

Act II For Act II, we will have two journal responses to cover the scenes. These will be based on the idea of selfishness vs. selflessness. Make a chart in your journal like the one below. While you watch/read Act II, fill the chart with examples of selfishness and selflessness. Example: Selfishness Selflessness Anne tells her father she loves only him. Anne prepares presents for each family member.

Act II Selfish vs. Selfless #1 What role does selfishness play in life? #2 What role does selflessness play in life? Use examples from the play AND from your own experience to explain your answer. Think about… Is selfishness always bad? Are there times when it’s needed? Is selflessness always helpful? When might it be a bad thing?
