New Topic - Do we really get on? L.I.1: To establish our prior knowledge of this topic L.I.2: To look at reasons that people explore. This topic is all about exploration and the interaction of different people and cultures as new countries around the world were discovered. STARTER: Do you know the names of any famous explorers? Discuss with a partner and see how many names you can come up with.

TARGET SETTING As we begin a new unit, I want you to think back to how you worked in Social Studies for the last 10 weeks. Is there anything that you would do differently this term? Set yourself two or three targets as to how you could improve your work in Social Studies. These should be specific e.g “use my homework diary”, rather than general e.g “do better”.

Prior Knowledge How many of these key words do you already know? Write what you think that the word means in the first column. We will them complete the 2 nd column once we have learnt a word/ phrase. Glue this into your SOS book.

INTRODUCTION Over the last 1000 years, explorers and adventurers from all parts of the globe have sought to discover new lands and to explore the limits of the earth as they knew it.

Reasons people explored?? Over many hundreds of years, many people have explored for many different reasons. Exploring, whether by land or ship, wasn’t easy – much less was known about the world, technology was much less advanced, ideas about the world were quite different.

What did people know about the world? Have people always seen the world the way we do?? Have you heard of any different theories about how people saw the world??

Map of the World Today

Reasons people explored?? With a partner, can you come up with the list of reasons that people chose to explore. We are going to watch some clips that show some reasons. Take notes as you watch.

What happened when they discovered new lands? Can you think of any examples, apart from New Zealand, of countries that were “discovered” by explorers? What happened to the people already living in those countries? Why?
