LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 1 GriPhyN Education and Outreach Joe Romano University of Texas at Brownsville

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 2 Overview of E/O activities Fall/Winter 2000: Begin search for E/O coordinator Begin benchmarking tests for UTB linux cluster Spring/Summer 2001: Search for E/O coordinator and benchmarking continue … Search completed: Manuela Campanelli hired as a faculty! E/O coordinator attend GGF1, makes contacts with dissemination program of European data grid projects, other E/O projects (EOT-PACI, QuarkNet, ThinkQuest), E/O coordinator partecipate in iVDGL proposal and contact tier3 centers (Hampton U., Salish Kootenai College). Begin construction of UTB linux cluster

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 3 Present E/O activities and plans Fall/Winter 2001: Construction of UTB cluster completed Begin installing Condor, Globus on UTB cluster E/O coordinator starts at UTB iVDGL funded! Grid-enabling UTB cluster: Condor, Globus Prepare and submit a proposal for REU supplement for iVDGL : however it is important that we know who would like to mentor students during next summer and propose projects!

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 4 Present E/O activities and plans continue … Design of new web-pages for GriPhyN E/O activities ( potsdam.mpg.de/~manuela/GridWeb/main.html ): potsdam.mpg.de/~manuela/GridWeb/main.html »Basic educational material about data grids, information about the physics experiments, etc. »Technical support information (e.g., documentation, user manuals, how- to guides) for the GriPhyN virtual data toolkits »Simple web-based access to real data which illustrates of the concept of virtual data (SDSS, LIGO??) Hire 1 graduate and 1undergraduate students with iVDGL funds Upgrade UTB cluster from 96 nodes to 128 nodes

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 5 E/O resources at UT Brownsville E/O coordinator tenure track faculty at UTB supported by GriPhyN funds for the next 5 years Additional support from iVDGL: » 1 graduate & 1 undergraduate students, upgrate of Linux cluster Additional support to do LIGO-related research »5 undergraduate and 1 graduate student are currently writing code for gravitational-wave searches »4 students are currently involved in the benchmarking and construction of a 96 Linux beowulf cluster 1 student has recently installed and is learning to use Condor »Students spend part of the summer at LIGO-Livingston Observatory participating in commissioning activities Linux cluster primarily for LIGO data analysis but it can also serve as a test-bed for GriPhyN software

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 6 E/O at other institutions ATLAS, CMS have education and outreach programs that we have not yet utilized for GriPhyN SDSS (Alex Szalay, JHU and Jim Gray, Microsoft) are developing a web-based interface to access SDSS data Skyserver Skyserver »Designed for general public (K-12 audience) »Layered-content to be usefulf for professional astronomers »Easily extended to illustrate concept of virtual data IMPORTANT: we all need to give talks at other colleges and universities to spread the new about GriPhyN (Please, inform and send your talks to E/O coordinators!

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 7 Future plans Year 2002: Improved GriPhyN E/O web pages: »Adding more technical support information (e.g., documentation, user manuals, how-to guides) for the GriPhyN virtual data toolkits »Active web-based access to real data which illustrates of the concept of virtual data (SDSS, LIGO) UTB apply to a REU site for GriPhyN research: »educational physicist at UTB Philip Dukes interested in paretcipating. Increased minority-serving institution participation as part of the iVDGL »UT Brownsville: (HIS) connections with LIGO; continued participation »Hampton College: (HBCU) connections with ATLAS »Salish Kootenai College: (AIHEC) connections with LIGO

LIGO- G Z GriPhyN All-Hands Meeting LSC Member Institution (UT Brownsville) 8 Future plans continue … E/O coordinator continue to serve as point of contact for other institutions, grid projects activities, and E/O programs (Quarknet, Thinquest, etc) interested in learning about GriPhyN and want to use GriPhyN tools Year 2003 and beyond: Proposal to All: Griphyn All-Hands meeting at minority serving institutions. We plan to have the 1st meeting in Brownsville in spring 2003! Include Griphyn E/O in course development.
