Presentation transcript:

Planning began in November 1985 and the house was completed in June 1987 House was designed and supervised by Bill Parks of Elem Valley Log Homes

Collecting and Preparing the Logs In November ft, straight trees were selected and marked. The logs were cut in February and March when the sap was low but there was still snow. The logs were trucked to the property and set up to peel. Peeling began when the sap began to bubble out the bottom of the logs. Once logs were peeled, they had to be oiled every sunny day to prevent them drying out before construction.

Foundation June 1986

Assembling the House Due to weather hold ups, there was not time to wait for the foundation to be completed before beginning assembly, so the house was first assembled on blocks. Each log was hand scribed using the Norwegian Hand Fit method. Logs had to be done one full round at a time. Ten high was required before windows or doors could be added. By ten high foundation was complete and house was moved.

Structural Support Only load bearing walls are the outside walls, other support provided by beam. Basement is 10ft high instead of standard 8 to allow for sunken main floor.

Shrinkage

Heating House is heated by either a wood furnace or woodstove found in the living room. Both stoves use the double flute, central chimney. Chimney is 24 ft tall and contains 2700 or 4 tons of bricks.
