DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT In 1891 William Naismith invented basketball. He was a PE teacher at a YMCA. THE NBA is the largest professional sports league. It combined the Basketball Association of America and the National Basketball League.
DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT The game is played with 5 players on each side. (2 Guards, 2 Forwards, and a Center) The game begins with a jump ball. The referee throws the ball in the air, as the ball comes down one player taps it to his team mate and the team that gains control gets the ball first. Players dribble and pass the ball to get it closer to their goal.
DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT When a team has the ball and is trying to score it is called offense. The other team trying to prevent them from scoring is called defense. When the ball is shot into the basket it is called a field goal. A field goal is worth 2 points unless in it behind the three point line then it is worth 3 points. If a team member is fouled, they are awarded a free throw. A free throw is worth 1 point.
DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT There are two types of fouls- personal fouls and technical fouls. A personal foul means a player holds, pushes or trips an opponent. A technical foul occurs when you call a time out when you have none, illegal participation of a players, or disrespect of a player or coach towards another.
DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT Traveling occurs when a player runs or walks with the ball. Double dribble occurs when a player dribbles the ball with both hands, or stops and starts dribbling the ball again.
DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT A player is out of bounds when touching the floor on or outside the boundary line. The ball is out of bounds when it touches a player who is out of bounds or any other person, the floor, or any object on or outside a boundary, or the supports or back of the backboard. While the ball is alive an offensive player cannot remain for more than 3 sec. In that part of the free-throw line, and the free-throw lanes. If two opponents are both firmly holding the ball, or an offensive ball handler is closely guarded by the defense for five sec., a jump ball is called. Double foul – when two opponents commit personal fouls against each other at the same time Dribble – ball movement by a player in control who throws or taps the ball in the air or onto the floor and then touches it. The dribble ends when the dribbler touches the ball with both hands and simultaneously permits it to come to rest while in contact with it, or loses control. Fake – using a deceptive move with the ball to pull the defensive player out of position Field goal – a basket scored from the field
DIXON PHYSICAL EDUCATION BASKETBALL UNIT Free - throw -the privilege given a player to score one or two points by unhindered throws for a goal from within the free throw circle and behind the free throw line. Jump ball – a method of putting the ball into play by tossing it up between two opponents in a circle Pick – a special type of screen where a player stands so the defensive player slides to make contact, freeing an offensive teammate for shot or drive Pivot – takes place when a player who is holding the ball steps once or more in any direction with the same foot; the other foot; called the pivot foot, being kept with its point of contact on the floor. Also, another term for inside player. Charging – personal contact against the body of an opponent by a player with the ball. Held ball – occurs when two opponents have one or both hands firmly on the ball, and neither can gain possession without undue roughness. Holding – personal contact with an opponent that interferes with his freedom of movement.
