Labour Community Services (LCS) An Overview

The History of our Partnership LCS is a project of T-YRLC in partnership with and is funded by both the UWT and UWYR; it was established in 1982 through a partnership agreement between LC & UW Organized Labour and UW have been partners for the past 52 years working together to advance the common good for all LCS expanded its programs to YR in 2008 by signing a similar partnership agreement with the UWYR.

Our Mandate Build a bridge between unions and community members to improve their lives, and to continue establishing an environment of community and union solidarity Work towards a just and equitable society for workers, their families, and the whole community Organize workers and their families in their communities and organizations to improve quality of life through labour education, advocacy for social justice, and provision of social services

Our Programs and Services United Way Services: – enhance and increase support for the UW through joint Mgmt/Union Campaigns – recruit union members to serve on UW various Cttee’s, “ Union Counsellor” Training Program : – A 9 weeks skills enhancing program for union members to become union counsellors – Learn about principles of active listening, effective communication and problem solving – social service organizations and effective referral skills

Our programs and Service “Customized Education” Program Special Projects – Provide support to unions, organizations, community groups to convene, identify, and address social issues affecting all members of the community Hosting Lifeline for United Steel Workers

United Way of York Region An effective non-profit organization Raises funds through the support of individual donors, workers and businesses Invests %83 of funds in 100 programs through 40 social service agencies that support and sustain the social wellbeing of our communities;

United Way of York Region Funds organizations Providing programs dealing with: – Mental Health, CMHA – Affordable housing and homelessness, Blue Doors Shelter for families

– Domestic violence and abuse, Y.B. House, Sandgate shelter for W and Children – Literacy – Newcomers and immigrants, COSTI 1in 3 of us will benefit from your donations
