EC H2020 Work Programme on IoT & Links with AIOTI

From IoT research towards innovation IoT Programme approach (reminder) FP7- Ignition phase FP7 research results (platforms, architectures, demonstrators) 2014-15 Building the eco-system ICT30: Building the eco-system, breaking silos CPS-IoT, Using platforms integrating devices, embedded systems and network technologies for a multiplicity of novel applications + ODI, FI-ware accelerators, IERC, standardisation etc. 2016-17 Going to market WP16-17: Focus Area on Internet of Things will focus on experimentation with real-life solutions being tested at large scale with users Deployment

ICT-30: IoT and Platforms for Connected Smart Objects Architectural concepts and concepts for semantic interoperability for "Platforms for Connected Smart Objects” Dynamically configured infrastructure and integration platforms for covering multiple technologies, multiple devices including robots, and heterogeneous integration levels Integration of smart devices into self-adaptive, robust, safe, intuitive, affordable and interconnected smart network and service platforms Reference implementations, including proof-of-concept, large-scale demonstrations and validation driven by innovative use scenarios, e.g. in Smart homes, public spaces and context aware commercial environments Potential use scenarios include health, energy, mobility and commercial services 7 Projects were selected out of 134 proposals for a total of 51 M€ Sub-granting mechanisms will be used for around 20% of total funding (#10 M€ in batches of 50-150k) Time-frame: projects starting January 2016

ICT 30 – use cases can be mobilised for AIOTI Port Logistics Scanning of FunCodes (Shopping) Localisation in Indoor Spaces Electric Cars Smart Home Automation and Control Traffic m-Health Pharmaceutical Packaging Smart Building Energy Efficiency Air Quality Edu Campus Parking Space Monitoring Smart Cities Smart Stadium Self- tracking Environmental Transport

ICT 30b - Coordination and Support Actions Measures for development of ecosystems around the platforms e.g. Communities of open API developers for low cost applications, networking of stakeholders Contribution to pre-normative activities / standardisation, development of business models, innovation activities which aim at stimulating platform adoption Activities to increase societal acceptance and foster specific education Funding of one Co-ordination and Support Action to stimulate the collaboration between selected projects and between the potential platforms (including research clusters) Preparing for follow-up Work Program, in particular innovation actions 2 complementary projects of 1 M€ each This should be used to provide logistical support for AIOTI as of January!

The AIOTI Momentum Declaration 4th February, 2015 The AIOTI Momentum Declaration Europe will have the most dynamic, agile IoT ecosystem and industry in the world which transforms people’s lives, drives growth, creates employment and addresses societal challenges. Today we agree, in partnership with the European Commission, that collaborative and innovation driven activities are timely necessary in order to drive a successful take-up of the Internet of Things. By understanding the potential of connected things, their intelligence and smart data, we all support the creation of an IoT ecosystem, which supports openness, value creation, scalability, sustainability and co-existence. Core principles are to cooperate and share knowledge with existing and new partners of all sizes along value chains, to adopt agile approaches and to search flexible agreements for convergence, interoperability and standardisation. Through common reference models and IoT Large Scale Pilot activities we aim to bring IoT forward and to stimulate service creation, acceptance and take-up from the user and creator perspectives.

Nutshell: AIOTI 2015-2016 Building the ecosystem (discussions across groups, members, national actors etc.): This should become the core task of AIOTI Link with ICT30 projects Digital Single Market: AIOTI can be a key contributor to the IoT chapters of the DSM Ambition should be to define a IoT policy (beyond technology) First step= develop use cases per IoT application (e.g connected car) Make AIOTI a business and a policy tool: Providing services to its members Meeting market needs and policy needs

A concrete challenge: smart mobility Round table during the Frankfurt Motor Show (IAA): automated and connected cars organised by Commissioner Oettinger Work on common roadmaps to speed up the development and deployment of connected automated driving. These roadmaps will cover better connectivity, mobile network coverage and reliability, the take-up of connected automated driving and how to address any security and privacy concerns of users. DG Connect would like to use AIOTI as a main channel to deliver on this challenge.

The future requires professional structures

Options for AIOTI: Legal forms and resources 1. Stay as it is Informal forum without legal personality No own resources, voluntary contributions in kind Logistical support from the EC 2. Exclusive partnership No own resources, but partnership with e.g. a trade association that provides services to AIOTI members. It would probably need to be an exclusive partner and AIOTI members would pay this partner for services (e.g. Freemium model)

Options for AIOTI: Legal forms and resources 3.Legal but poor AIOTI becomes a legal entity (EC observer) No own resources, voluntary contributions in kind Logistical support from the EC 4. Legal with exclusive partnership No own resources, but partnership with e.g. a trade association that provides services to AIOTI members (e.g. Freemium model). 5. Full association AIOTI collects fees to pay some staff and to organise a series of services etc.

DISCUSSION / PRO & CONS

Options for the longer term (2017) AIOTI stays as it is: informal forum AIOTI becomes an industry association keeping initial goals AIOTI becomes a European Technology Platform AIOTI becomes an association and stimulates a Public Private Partnership AIOTI becomes a European Innovation Partnership (involvement of MS and regions)
