Violence Prevention By: Maggie Froelich & Mihir Patel Grades 2-4 Activity Duration :15 minutes

National Health Education Standards  Standard 4: Students will demonstrate the ability to use interpersonal communication skills to enhance health and avoid or reduce health risks.

Indiana Health & PE Academic Standards  Demonstrate respect and compassion for students with individual differences.  Encourage classmates who demonstrate difficulty with skill performance.

Student Objectives  Demonstrate an argument, and infer how you could have made the situation better.  Experiment with positive language.  Develop a list of what you think a bully is.

Materials Needed  Take the Pledge Certificate  Writing utensil  Paper  Students  An enclosed room

Preparation  Print out Take the Pledge certificates  Think about possible scenarios involving violence  Make a list of positive language

Introductory Activity  Introduce both activities.  You will be role playing situations where it could become violent, then we will determine how else it could have played out.  Then we will be discussing what bullying is and then take a pledge

Lesson Activities  Role Play – learn positive ways to deal with anger  Count off by 2’s  Come up with an argument that may lead to violence  Act it out  Discuss other ways the situation could have been handled in a positive manner  Take the Pledge – put a stop to bullying   Complete the certificate

Closing Activity  What is your take away?  What are positive words we can use when there is a disagreement?  What can you do if you see someone else being bullied?  What does this pledge mean?

Assessment of Activities  To assess the students understanding of violence prevention we will ask high level thinking questions.  Listen to their conversations  Listen to their questions

Success for All Accommodations You can print out an example situation if you have a set of students who cannot speak If a student cannot write their own name they may also fill the certificate out online

Safety Concerns  A student may go to far in the role playing  Must monitor the activity closely  Monitor the language that is used
