Role of Board Members

The National Transportation Safety Board consists of 5 Members, appointed by the President, including a Chairman designated by the President, by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. Members serve 5-year staggered terms.

A Member is also designated by the President to serve as Vice Chairman. The Chairman and Vice Chairman serve 2-year terms.

 Three Members of the Board constitute a quorum

Functions of NTSB Board Members  Review and approve draft investigative reports, probable cause determinations, and recommendations  Accompany the go-team on major launches serving as on-scene spokespersons  Serve as Chairmen of the Board of Inquiry at public hearings  Serve as an advocate of the Board's work before the Congress and federal, state, and local governmental agencies concerned with transportation safety  Review and approve draft investigative reports, probable cause determinations, and recommendations  Accompany the go-team on major launches serving as on-scene spokespersons  Serve as Chairmen of the Board of Inquiry at public hearings  Serve as an advocate of the Board's work before the Congress and federal, state, and local governmental agencies concerned with transportation safety

Functions of NTSB Board Members  Function as the Court of Appeals for airmen and mariners. Board Members rule on the suspension, amendment, modification, revocation, or denial of any operating certificate or license or assessment of civil penalty issued by the Secretary of Transportation and the decisions of the Commandant of the Coast Guard, on appeals from the orders of any administrative law judge, revoking, suspending, or denying a license, certificate, document, or register in proceedings
