Bernard Rahming Lee Ann Pruske Rosann Hollinger Sharonda Harris Assessment Session PRIME Framework: Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle MTL Meeting, October 2009

Session Goals: 1) To understand the connections between the work of the MTLs and the Teaching and Learning Principle from the NCSM’s PRIME Leadership Framework. 2) To determine a starting point for your work at your schools around the Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle and assessment. The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation under Grant No. EHR

Assessment Sessions Forecast  August 09 Kick-off : Principles of Formative Assessment  The Prime Leadership Framework: Teaching and Learning Principle  WALT Lesson Planning Process and Cognitive Demand concepts  Student Protocol for examining student work  Descriptive Feedback/ Portfolio  Teacher Protocol for Lesson Study The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

NCSM’s PRIME Leadership Framework  Framework to guide the work of novice and veteran leaders in mathematics.  A tool to guide conversations and actions about leadership around indicators of exemplary practice.  It provides language, focus and actions for professional conversations with colleagues in the context of the workplace. NCSM (2008). Principles and Indicators for Mathematics Education Leaders (PRIME). The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

NCSM’s PRIME Leadership Framework Leadership is founded upon:  Three essential themes 1. Success for every student, teacher and leader. 2. Research-informed teacher actions 3. Teacher collaboration and professional learning  Four essential principles 1. Equity Leadership 2. Teaching & Learning Leadership 3. Curriculum Leadership 4. Assessment Leadership NCSM (2008). Principles and Indicators for Mathematics Education Leaders (PRIME). The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Stage 1: Know & Model Leadership of Self Stages of Leadership Stage 3: Advocate & Systematize Leadership in the Extended Community NCSM (2008). Principles and Indicators for Mathematics Education Leaders (PRIME). Stage 2: Collaborate & Implement Leadership of Others

 Honoring Ideas  Listening to others  Respecting all viewpoints  Everyone contributes Norms of Table Members The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Stepping Back into Assessment Leadership Principle  Step 1: Read the Assessment Principle on pages from the PRIME Leadership Framework book.  Step 2: Looking at the three Indicators and Stages, circle the stage descriptors that best describe the work you have been doing.  Step 3: Jot down examples of your work in the margin.  Step 4: When cued, share with your table one of the Indicators and a work example. The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Assessment Leadership Principle 4: Ensure timely, accurate monitoring of student learning and adjustment of teacher instruction for improved student learning. Indicator 1: Every teacher uses student assessments that are congruent and aligned by grade level or course content. Indicator 2. Every teacher uses formative assessment processes to inform teacher practice and student learning. Indicator 3. Every teacher uses summative assessment data to evaluate mathematics grade level, course, and program effectiveness. The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

 Step 1 On your own: Read pages The NCSM Vision and Action Indicators of the Teaching and Learning Principle. Record your ideas and reactions in your notebook.  Step 2: Table discussion: Share one idea per person. NCSM Vision of the Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

 It all goes back to the teaching and learning of meaningful mathematics in the classroom.  Classroom instruction is key to learning.  The planning for instruction and instructional practices must align with well articulated goals, instruction, and assessment.  Assessment and instruction are tightly intertwined. Teaching and Learning Principle Key Ideas The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle  Stage 1: Leadership of Self- Know and Model  Stage 2: Leadership of Others- Collaborate and Implement Indicator 1: Student Learning Indicator 2: Teaching Practice Indicator 3: Professional Learning The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Stage 1: Leadership of Self  Step 1: On your own: Read Stage 1 for each Indicator.  Step 2: On your own: Complete the graphic organizer. Identify the big idea for each Indicator and the evidence of your work around the Indicator.  Step 3:Table discussion: Share a big idea for the Indicator and one piece of evidence of your work with that Indicator. The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle  Stage 2: Leadership of Others- Collaborate and Implement Indicator 1: Student Learning Indicator 2: Teaching Practice Indicator 3: Professional Learning The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Stage 2: Leadership of Others  Step 1: On your own: Read Stage 2 for each Indicator.

Whole Group Share  Each table decide on a big idea for each assigned Indicator to share.  Share evidence of MTL work and the corresponding Indicator. The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Reflection Question  What does the NCSM Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle have to do with assessment in your building?  Turn and Talk The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

3-2-1 Take Away  3 things you learned in the session.  2 things you will take back to your building to try with your staff.  1 thing you will bring back in December to share with other MTLs. The Milwaukee Mathematics Partnership (MMP), an initiative of the Milwaukee Partnership Academy (MPA), is supported with funding by the National Science Foundation.

Session Goals Revisited: 1) To understand the connections between the work of the MTLs and the Teaching and Learning Principle from the NCSM’s PRIME Leadership Framework. 2) To determine a starting point for your work at your schools around the Teaching and Learning Leadership Principle and assessment.
