CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Project Management to the Fifth Online Organizing and Volunteer Project Management

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Project Management: Overview Project management is the science of determining the set of resources used over a set period of time to a desired effect Project management is therefore limited by the perception of available resources, the perception of time, and the understood nature of the desired effect Key to clarify: what are goals, what are milestones, and what are deliverables

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Learning through Doing: Exercise Form a group of three. Points are gotten by collecting the High School name and year of people in the building in the next 30 minutes – 5 points are given per person, multiplied by (30 – N), where N is the number of minutes the exercise takes the people on the team to complete their task. A list must be delivered as a website at the end of the period allotted

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Exercise Ground Rules After five minutes of planning, team members cannot speak with one another Each team is given only one pen and one piece of paper Only two people out of the group can talk during the exercise –only to people outside of their group

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Go!

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Tally

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Lessons and Experiences How did you understand the assignment? How did you use your five minutes? How did you work together without verbal, face-to-face communication? Do you think you would have been more or less efficient by being proximate and communicating by voice?

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Principles for Digital Project Management Autonomy is default: online existence is hard to track. As such, individuals need atomic tasks Platforms determine product development. Fit the platform to your audience’s needs Clear objectives must be agreed upon – individuals need to know how atomic tasks align Milestones and clear check-ins are crucial for quality control Centralized curation or editorial oversight replaces central direction

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Plan Your Time Well There are critical tasks and there are flexible tasks – what a task is, is determined by the time needed to complete it and the deadline. Not the value associated with it. When working with a community, always assign highest priority to force multiplying tasks. Communication is the key to community movement.. Plan how you will bring on-going small successes to keep the quest alive in people’s minds.

CJP/PresenTense Fellowship Time for some action Start-Ups need to follow the 80%: If it’s 80% ready, launch. Otherwise, the perfect will be the enemy of the good. So go get’em.
